Arsenal’s £16m  signing of Calum Chambers raised many brows this summer. Such a hefty fee for a 19 year old with minimal experience could be seen as a massive gamble by some but Chambers is quickly proving his worth at the club. Matt Le Tissier recently spoke about Chambers, saying he is worth the investment and will be a major asset in the future. Le Tissier mentioned that his price would always be at a premium since he is English born, but believes Arsenal pulled off a real coup. I agree with Le Tissier and believe this transfer will be seen as a bargain in the future. Here are five reasons why Chambers will be a success at Arsenal.

  1.  Confidence

Chambers has already proved he is not daunted by life at Arsenal. He has been thrust directly into the fire and hasn’t looked anything less than solid. He is composed, intelligent, and looks as if he has been in the team for years. Current injury struggles in the squad means he will most likely retain his place and I’m looking forward to seeing him go from strength to strength.

2. Versatility

Chambers’ ability to play multiple positions will only bode well for his progress, and he will be asked to chip in wherever needed throughout the season. Different positions afford a player the chance to sharpen his sword and mold his all around game, so Chambers will continue to grow. Versatility will always give you a necessary advantage when growing as a player, so Chambers should use this to his advantage.

3. English core

Chambers has added to the ever growing English core at Arsenal and even recalled his first England call up this year. Having the chance to grow with other members of your country’s generation at club level as well as international level is a rare treat, and Chambers can benefit from this. Wenger spoke of his ambition to produce multiple English World Cup winning players at Arsenal , eluding to the likes of Chambers, Walcott, Wilshere, Chamberlain, and Gibbs (this was before we signed Welbeck, who adds yet another to this lot) all having the chance to grow and develop together.

4. Mertesacker and Koscielny

In Mertesacker and Koscielny, Chambers can’t ask for better role models to follow and learn from. Mertesacker is a World Cup champion possessing loads of experience on every stage in world football. Koscielny is experienced in his own right as well, having shot through the ranks and become a prominent figure for club and country. Chambers is in safe hands with these two showing him the ropes.

5. Wenger’s tutelage

The boss is another man Chambers can take comfort in learning from. If there is one man who can grow and cultivate talent, it is Arsene Wenger and Chambers will learn much from him. I have no doubt Chambers will continue to develop under Wenger’s umbrella.

It was really odd that Southampton fought tooth and nail to keep Schneiderlin, who is a good player, but let Chambers go so easily. Schneiderlin is French, would have netted Southampton a really nice fee, significantly more than Chambers, and while Chambers never really said he wanted to go or wanted to stay, Schneiderlin publicly asked to be let go.

Southampton have Nathaniel Clyne at right back, where Southampton project Chambers’ future, but Arsenal have already proven that Chambers can play CB as well as right back. Schneiderlin is a quality player, but great midfielders are generally easier to find than top class defenders, so it seemed odd that Southampton were so willing to sell Chambers, Lambert, Lallana, Shaw, and Lovren.

They did really good business replacing their players, with Pelle, Tadic, Forster, Bertrand, Long, and Alderweireid. Pelle and Long are an upgrade over Lambert, Forster is better than Boruc, , Tadic might be a significant upgrade on Lallana, and Alderweireid/Bertrand probably as good as or better than the departed Lovren and Shaw.

Chambers is the wild card and Southampton may rue selling him.

Was thinking to myself earlier chambers could prove to be arsenals best signing of summer sanchez will prob win it with most but chambers is more valuable than sanchez to us right now tbh and is playing beyond his years 16m looks cheap

He has potential but I wish we weren’t relying on him as third choice CB or second choice right back. He’s not close to being ready. Needed another year at Southampton
