Yes, he’s been dreadful of late. Yes, Arsenal can and should target better players. And no, he wouldn’t add anything or offer any improvement to the defenders we already have. But let’s at least take a second to analyze a possible move for Chris Smalling.

I share the view of many gooners which is that he is not Arsenal material, or top class material for that matter, but I will say that he did not become a bad player over night. He was sensational at Fulham, and perhaps the transition to a big club was too much for him.

The expectations as Fulham were far lower than he is encountering now and any mistake he makes now will be magnified tenfold. He played alongside Brede Hangeland which perhaps helped him in the long run and he looked a descent defender. The same could be said when he played beside Vidic or Ferdinand which suggests he may not be ready to lead or marshal the back line by himself, but could be useful alongside an authoritative figure.

Right? Right!? Maybe. For Arsenal’s sake I really hope so. I’m still not sure how much is really in this rumour, but in the event that Wenger is really considering this, he would be at least be a bargain and probably not the only target. If he joins the club alongside Hummels or Chiellini (wishful thinking I know) or someone of that class, than he could be a real coup to have in reserve.

I share you disapproval my fellow gooners, but let’s at least keep an open mind and believe in Wenger and Arsenal. It’s the least we can do.

Rather give Hayden a show. Not sure why he’s not being considered over Monreal in the first place..
