The Daily Mirror’s John Cross believe Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger will remain at the helm for the foreseeable future. Speaking on Sky Sports’ Sunday Supplement Panel, Cross said Arsenal are nearly title challengers, and believes Arsene Wenger may stay on past his current contract.

Cross commented on Arsenal’s habit of coming so close season after season. He says Wenger’s project is seemingly coming to fruition and as such may entice the boss to stay further. Cross also echoed the beliefs of many in regards to a certain player he feels Wenger should target.

“He (Wenger) should sign Petr Cech or someone of that ilk, a really world class goalkeeper, and a holding midfield player to boost the squad,” he said. “And then I think he’s nearly there. They are so close.”

“Not only do I think he will see out the remaining two years of his contract that are left, but if he thinks he is making progress, he will push for another. That’s Arsene Wenger – he is addicted to football, addicted to Arsenal.”

He concluded by saying Arsenal are nearly there in terms of their squad of players, and believes this summer transfer window will be huge for the club.

“We reach a point in every season and say ‘Arsenal will be contenders next season’,” he said. “Last year, we were talking about the defensive midfield player that they didn’t sign in the summer and that’s why they’re falling short.”

“I think he is closing down on the title, it’s very obvious where Arsenal’s frailties are, and it will be interesting to see where he addresses these in the summer. If he does, I think they will be potential title winners next year.”

Has Cross got a point? I don’t think anyone would argue that Arsenal are nearly ready to hold a sustained title challenge and it will be interesting to see who Wenger targets this summer.

What do you think gooners? Will Wenger stay beyond his current contract length?
