Alexis Sanchez is set to miss the opening period of the Premier League season, after leading his nation to Copa America glory. Alexis was the star man for Chile throughout the tournament, and put the finishing touches on his performances by slotting home the winning penalty against Argentina in the final.

Great news for Chile and Alexis, but bad news for Arsenal, as Alexis’ heavy involvement puts him at a high risk of burnout. Arsene Wenger confirmed before hand that should Alexis and Chile make it to the latter stages of the competition, the player would miss the beginning matches of the Premier League campaign.

As the Independent reports, Wenger had this to say regarding the player:

“That is not good news (for Arsenal) because they (Chile) finish very late and if they go very far, he will miss the start of the season.”

It is believed that the official confirmed date of Sanchez’s return to training is July 27th, as a minimum three weeks is required. That means he won’t join up with the squad until there is less than a week before the Community Shield clash with Chelsea.

Being that he will only just be returning to training, he could miss more than a few matches before he is fully match fit again. The season opener against West Ham on August 9th, as well as fixtures against Crystal Palace, Liverpool, and Newcastle could come too soon.

Arsenal should have enough to navigate these matches with maximum or close to maximum points without Alexis in the line up. He needs to rest, and it’s better he does so at the beginning as opposed to burning out mid season.
