Goalkeeper Manuel Almunia has declared his interest in playing for England.

The Spaniard will become eligible for the national side should he not be capped by his native Spain before.

And the current Arsenal number one is more than happy to explore other options at international football, saying: “If I can lend England a hand I don’t see why I shouldn’t play for them.

“I don’t rule it out.

“I want to thank the country for the support it has shown me.”

Manager Arsène Wenger also backed Almunia’s bid to play for England, saying: “I don’t know why he hasn’t been capped by Spain but England should take advantage of the situation and call him up!”
