Born on this day in 1962 was Arsenal legend and current assistant coach Steve Bould. What a leader he was at the back and how Arsenal could do with him or a player like him now. Tough as nails he was, and never afraid to get stuck in.

The man fondly nicknamed “Bouldy” was a fan favorite at Higbury and will always be remembered by gooners. Often overshadowed by the likes of Adams and Winterburn, Bould deserves just as much credit for the impenetrable back line that saw Arsenal through during those golden years.

Not only a stonewall defender, Bould was an exceptional footballer as well. He was comfortable with the ball at his feet and could pick a pass from anywhere. That famous 50 yard lofted pass to Tony Adams will stick in the hearts of all Arsenal fans forever. Adams would go on to receive a statue commemorating that glorious celebration, but Bould deserves some credit as well. Relive his magisterial ball down below.

Of course, he was known more for his rough and gruff defending. Imposing and and fearless, Bould was quick to stick his head in amongst the flying cleats and sacrifice his body for the team. He was never afraid to enter no mans land and for that he has endeared himself to Arsenal faithful forever. Watch the video down below to see Bouldy at his glorious best stopping attackers in their tracks. He was useful on the attacking end too and chipped in with a few headed goals.

Having transitioned to coaching now, he has been massive for Arsenal as the head youth coach for years before taking over as assistant in 2012. Many credit Bould for the defensive improvement Arsenal has showed in recent years and we look forward to seeing where the team can go with Bould involved.

We at Arsenal-mania would like to wish a very happy birthday to Bouldy!
