Theo Walcott says he is more than happy to fight for his place in the England squad, and believes the competition amongst the players is only a good thing for the nation. Walcott had to endure quite a wait to earn his 37th cap, having missed much football through injury over the past year and a half.

“I’m only going to get even sharper with games,” he said. “Competition is always going to be there.”

“I’ve been there from 17 and I’ve managed to get through it now and then. Competition is healthy. We want as a nation for all the players to be playing well.”

“It’s only going to spur you on and make you a better player. Bring it on, definitely. I think you need to prove yourself no matter what. I had a long-term injury but I got back from that and not many people would have worked hard like I did to get back to where I am.”

“To get the shirt back on after such a long injury spell, I’m very pleased with that.”

Walcott went on to say that he is pleased with his recovery and hopes to take his time returning to full form. Gooners will be hoping he approaches his position with Arsenal the same way, as he faces stiff competition for places for his club as well.

He looked sharp in his short cameo on Friday and he may see more minutes on the pitch in tomorrow’s friendly with Italy. Let’s hope he returns to form sooner rather than later for Arsenal and for England.
