We are locked in a two-way battle with Premier League rivals Chelsea for Joao Moutinho, that’s according to the Daily Star (I know, I know).

The AS Monaco midfielder has been a long-term target of Arsene Wenger’s with rumours of a potential move to north London dating back to when Moutinho was with Portuguese side FC Porto.

Whether Moutinho is the defensive-midfielder we need, I’m not so sure; he has played that position for club and current, however, this season Monaco have only used the 28-year-old in the deeper position twice this season – 11 run-outs in centre-mid and six times just behind the strikers.

It does appear that Moutinho will be on the move, having come close to leaving the Ligue 1 side in the summer, whether he will rock up at the Emirates remains to be seen.

What do you reckon? Is he the man for us? I’m not convinced Joao solves our midfield problems.

he is not in any shape or form a defensive midfielder nor has any one with a grasp of football knowledge in the past described him as one. Also i very much doubt there is a “battle” between us and chelsea who have about as many (5 or 6) players of his ilk. That aside top quality player brilliant playmaker, not what we need.

Would be a massive upgrade over Arteta and definitely Flamini. However, he doesn’t really offer that physical presence we sometimes lack. But I suppose we could still bring that kind of player in when Flamini and/or Arteta hopefully leave the Emirates in the summer.
