There has been much debate about the form of Arsenal’s young Englishman Calum Chambers. The former Southampton man has shown glimpses of both brilliance and inexperience which to be fair is expected from a player so young.

The boss yesterday reiterated the view that many gooners have previously expressed; Chambers should not have seen this much time on the pitch just yet.  He had this to say;

“For a 19-year-old player, Chambers has played too many games.”

“They all hit the wall after 15, 17 games. You have to give them a breather, refresh and get them back again.”

“And at the moment, to have that responsibility in every single game is a lot on a player of that age.”

He went on to say that Chamber’s youth and inexperience are what dictated his decision to deploy Debuchy in centre back ahead of Chambers against Liverpool.

“Yes,” he replied when asked if that was the reason. “I put Debuchy in, first of all, because he is good in the air.”

“At Stoke, we suffered in the air. He is a defender of experience and the experience, sometimes in just one movement, can make a difference. And the defensive responsibility is a bit less on the flank.”

One thing is for sure, whether you have been impressed with Chambers or not you must give credit to such a young lad for fearlessly holding his own while under intense pressure. Making the step to a club as big as Arsenal as a 19 year old is difficult but Chambers has stepped up admirably and has hardly looked over run for the most part (I’ll agree to look past the Swansea match if you will).

Wenger has acknowledged the player needs a breather and perhaps that will come in the next few weeks or so.
