Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has revealed his disappointment at Liverpool’s decision to sack Brendan Rodgers, who he believes is a ‘quality manager’.
Liverpool announced the decision to dismiss Rodgers yesterday afternoon after a 1-1 draw with Everton and Arsene Wenger was asked about the incident shortly after it happened, with the Gunners boss facing the press after the victory over Manchester United.
“I am always sad when that happens because I think he is a quality manager. Unfortunately, the pressure is always bigger on the managers and to resist the disappointment is more difficult.”
‘I think he was unlucky not to win the Premier League. He was the closest certainly to win the Premier League of all the managers who have been working for the club. But that’s the way it goes now and I wish him good luck. I am sure he will find a job again.”
Wenger saw two managerial casualties fall at the weekend, with Dick Advocaat also leaving Sunderland, whilst the Frenchman enters a landmark twentieth year in charge of his North London side.
Rodgers and Wenger had faced off already this season, drawing 0-0 at the Emirates Stadium in August, whilst overall Wenger had a decent record against the Northern Irishman. He lost just once to a Reds side led by Rodgers, 5-1 in February 2014.
Wenger secured four victories and three draws against Rodgers, which included a thrilling 3-1 win at the Emirates last season.
It is always sad to loose a job but that’s how the world of football is. Football is all about winning whether you play good or bad, the pressure muonted after missing the tittle last season and given that the club [LIVERPOOL] purchased alot of players but the problem is the same. To me as a fan of football, [though not a fan of liverpool] am not shocked by this action.
