Of all the talking points surrounding Arsenal’s clash with Chelsea, the Cesc Fabregas summer saga (I use that term loosely) continues to surface in the headlines. The player originally insisted that Arsenal declined the option to bring him back due to the presence of Ozil, a claim which Wenger confirmed.

The boss has now apparently changed his stance, denying claims that he spoke to player directly and implying that he was interested in the player but the move to Chelsea was already sealed. In interview with the Daily Star, Wenger had this to say:

“I believe his decision was already made.”

“I personally believe that deal was done a long time ago, early 2014. I didn’t speak to him directly.”

“I was informed that he might go to Chelsea, but when I was informed I thought the deal was already done.”

Interestingly, Wenger ended the interview on a rather mysterious note. When asked directly whether or not he rejected a chance to re-sign his former captain, he simply had this to say:

“We will have to discuss that one day.”

Fascinating twist in the tale. It unfortunately means very little now, with our former captain parading around in the blue of our cross town foes, but should make for an interesting story down the line. Let’s just make sure we remind him what Arsenal is all about on Sunday.
