Arsenal right back Hector Bellerin has hailed the competition for places in the Arsenal side, saying it pushes the lads to lift their game and can only spell good news for the club.

The current Arsenal squad is probably one of the deepest it has been in recent years, and Bellerin says the friendly fight for game time benefits all involved. The Spaniard is of course at the brunt of a high profile duel with Mathieu Debuchy, having stepped in for the injured Frenchman last season.

He successfully retained his place now that Debuchy has returned, but Bellerin is taking nothing for granted.

“I think the competition in every single position in the team is really strong,” the Spaniard told the Arsenal Weekly podcast. “That’s going to make the team train harder, perform better and grow as players.”

“We have to give our best. We know we can’t relax, we know we can’t take out starting position for granted when we have it.”

He continued.

“Even when you think you’re going to play you need to train hard because otherwise it’s on to the next one and you’re going to be on the bench.”

“I think it’s very good and all the successful teams have that kind of battle in every single spot because that keeps you on your feet and makes you perform better.”

“I know it’s going to be difficult with Mathieu back now but I’m just going to keep training hard.”

The 20 year old has earned a call up to the Spanish national side in what tops off a meteoric rise in the past 12 months. It is clear this lad has his feet planted firmly on the ground, and with this attitude he is destined for stardom.

Fantastic humility from Hector, and he is showing no signs of succumbing to the dreaded sophomore slump. As long as his performances continue he will keep his spot and he is proving to be a real asset to the side.
