Lukas Podolski, a player surrounded in Arsenal exit rumours for the last twelve months or so, was the hero last night as the Gunners snatched victory from the jaws of defeat against Anderlecht in their Group D Champions League clash.

Speaking post-match regarding his matchwinner, Arsene Wenger has refuted claims that the German international was close to the Emirates exit door in the summer: “He was never close to leaving. He has 115 caps for Germany – that is not a coincidence, that shows you his quality,”

“I think he is a guy you want to have the ball in the box. His shot is fantastic, his accuracy is great and he has very short back lift. He nearly scored before and I know when he comes on he can score.”

Le Professeur went on to heap praise upon the striker, by saying: “We know Podolski can always score. He is frustrated and I understand that of course.

“But he’s important as well and he showed that tonight and he will be important in the coming months. It took him a while to get back to a good physical level [after the World Cup] and now he’s nearly there.”

Well that’s odd. We all thought Pod was leaving early season …. till Giroud got injured …. when we understood Wenger made him stay after all ?? Mind you the outside world does not see to know that in 2013 the Suarez was all thrashed out and ready for signing and …. at the last minute … Wenger changed his mind !!
