Arsenal have been linked with a move for Real Madrid midfielder Acer Illaramendi, as Wenger continues his search for an established holding midfielder. Reports in the Metro have suggested that Wenger could swoop for the out of favour man, with the player said to be looking for a move away from Spain.

Illaramendi joined the club in 2013, but has struggled to hold down a regular first team place in the side. Despite having 4 and a half years still to go on his contract, he is said to be heading towards the exit sooner rather than later. Reports have been conflicting though, as some have suggested the move could be done in the summer as opposed to this month.

The player has managed just 12 league appearances this season, starting 3. With the likes of Isco, Kroos, James, and Modric all ahead of him in the pecking order, Illaramendi has found minutes on the pitch hard to come by. He is also a reported target of Athletic Bilbao who have reportedly made first contact, but the player allegedly favours a move away from Spain.

Madrid have also just added Lucas Silva from Cruzeiro which could leave Illaremendi’s position in even further doubt. The Spanish giants are believed to be looking for a sum as close as possible to the £24million they paid for the player two summers ago.

I am not sure exactly what to make of these reports. £24million is a lot to pay for a player who hasn’t seen much action. Though I rate the 24 year old, I believe for that sum Arsenal could land a bigger and better name. Perhaps a certain Real Madrid teammate of Illaramendi that Arsenal have been linked with for ages now.

Let us know what you think down below about this rumour. Good business or waste of money?
