Kieran Gibbs has revealed the secret to Arsenal’s improved fortunes this year, saying the raised competition for places has strengthened the squad greatly.

Gibbs returned to the side yesterday against Sunderland, having missed quite a lot of football this season due to the form of Nacho Monreal. It is perhaps this new found competition that inspired his statements. Yesterday’s draw all but secured a third place finish for Arsenal, an improvement on the back to back fourth place finishes of the past couple seasons.

Speaking after the game, Gibbs commented on what it was that makes Arsenal so much stronger this year around. He had this to say:

“Fewer injuries basically,” he said. “Competition is much higher and that has raised the level.”

“Sometimes in the past we have struggled to put a team out, now we could put two teams out. Everyone has been fit and that pushes each other on. That’s been the difference.”

Most would tend to agree with Gibbs. A deeper and fresher squad has definitely benefited Arsenal this season and gooners will hope for more of the same come next season. The injury big has never been very kind to Arsenal, so let’s hope this new found health is here to stay.

Gibbs is fast, but he will never be a good player until he learns to play with the right foot. 90% per cent of his passes are backwards because he can’t pass the ball with his right foot. He is lucky to be part of Arsenal’s first team.
