Arsenal great Thierry Henry says he understands what Liverpool youngster Raheem Sterling is currently experiencing. Sterling has been the topic of discussion lately, dominating headlines with reports of his current contract stand off.

He is expected to inform Brendan Rodgers and Liverpool tomorrow that he will not be extending his contract at the club, fueling speculation that he could be on his way out of Anfield.

This news has not been met fondly by some reporters, with Sterling booed and jeered at an awards ceremoney recently. While Henry of course made no mention of getting booed, he said he was in a similar position to Sterling when he was his age and at his stage in his career.

“I went through the same thing,” Henry told Sky Sports. “When I was young I had a problem with Real Madrid and Monaco because some guys that were around me were putting stuff in my head.”

“I lost my football, mentally I wasn’t there anymore, I wasn’t concentrating on anything, and therefore it looked like I was going to have a good career and people were questioning me when I hadn’t even started my career. So it’s the same thing with Raheem Sterling.”

One thing that is certain is that Sterling has many, many years ahead of him still. Henry certainly was able to overcome these obstacles when he was Sterling’s age, so if that is anything to go by, Sterling will be confident of doing the same.
