Arsenal record signing Mesut Ozil has some lofty ambitions for the year of 2016, namely which include representing his country in the Olympic Games in Rio as well scooping the prestigious Ballon d’Or. Ozil is also targeting completing a trio of international feats by lifting the Euro 2016 trophy having of course already achieved a World Cup triumph.

Speaking to Sport Bild as reported by ESPN, Ozil responded candidly when asked about the possibility of joining the German side in Rio. The Germany U-21 side has qualified for the Olympic Games earlier in the summer, and competition rules state that three players born before January of 1993 may take part.

Ozil said he would jump at the chance to be one of the three in Rio, and hopes to then go on and lift the Euro in France.

“It would be wicked. The coach [Horst Hrubesch] decides whether I’ll receive a call up.”

“Should he ask me, I would not say no. I would love to take part in the Olympic Games in Rio and chase the medals with our lads. The Olympic Games would certainly be a real career highlight.”

“As a World Cup winner I want to become a European champion in France next year. That’s our big goal.”

Mesut was sure to save from success for Arsenal though, saying he targets more trophies with the side and hopes that helping Arsenal to more silverware will serve him well in his bid to lift the Ballon d’Or. He acknowledged however that he must be more clinical in front of goal if he is to have a bigger impact.

“I have to become more dangerous in front of the goal. I was injured for long spells last season, and scored only five in 32 competitive games. I want to improve this. To achieve it, I have to be a bit more egotistical.”

“You need to win major titles with both club and country,” he added, in regards to winning the Ballon d’Or. “In 2016, the chances are there to do just that. We’ve got a great team at Arsenal, which can win titles.”

“After two FA Cup victories in the past two years, we want to be in the mix for the Premier League title. We also need to beat the knockout stages curse in Champions League.”

“The group stage clashes with Bayern Munich are a real benchmark test. And I want to win the European Championships with Germany.”

Ambitious from Mesut to say the least. Such aspirations will come as music to gooners’ ears, as we could soon see the best ever Mesut strutting his stuff. A focused Ozil is a frightening preposition for opponents, and the what an impact he would bring to the side.

I reckon he would rejuvenate the side like a new signing, and let’s hope Mesut’s lofty plans go accordingly.
