With the imminent arrival of Gabriel Paulista from La Liga outfit Villarreal – in a deal believed to be £11.3million – the Daily Express are reporting that Arsene Wenger is looking to add further to Arsenal’s defensive options with a swoop for Valencia’s Jose Luis Gaya.

Gaya has been something of a mainstay for Valencia during this current campaign, making 17 starts – plus two substitute appearances – in La Liga as well as a couple of appearances in the Copa Del Rey.

Rather surprisingly, the Spanish U-21 international is a left-back, a place where we are pretty well stocked with Kieran Gibbs and Nacho Monreal battling it out for the starting spot quite evenly this season.

Arsene Wenger may well be thinking long-term, though, with Gaya only being 19-years-old coupled with the fact our England international is Abou Diaby’s best mate in the treatment room and Nacho has been linked with a move back to Spain’s top flight this window.

Le Professeur signed a young, yet promising, Calum Chambers despite also bringing Mathieu Debuchy to the club at the same time, so a move for Valencia’s rising star isn’t beyond the realms of possibility despite our options.

Neither Gibbs or Monreal are very good. I would hope they are looking for an upgrade.
