Confidence is growing in the Arsenal camp and Arsene Wenger admits he hold out a hope of challenging for the title. Arsenal find themselves in a familiar position, and no I don’t mean in a battle for fourth place. Arsenal know all about coming from behind in a title race, as the gunners did the same thing in the 97-98 title race where they trailed United by 12 points at the end of February.

After today’s victory over Villa and Chelsea and City’s draw yesterday, Arsenal now sit 11 points off the pace in the beginning of the month and Wenger feels Arsenal have the ability to overcome this deficit with a consistent run of form. With 15 games and 45 points left still to play for, Wenger believes his side is in with a chance still but maintains that Arsenal are remaining realistic with themselves.

Speaking yesterday before that game, Wenger had this to say:

“(challenging for the title) is our target, but we have to be realistic. What we want is to win every game we can, but at the moment we are 14 points behind Chelsea, they need to lose five games, and they have lost only two until now.”

“What we want to do is focus on our performances and show that we can produce consistent results. After, where we will finish, it is difficult to say.”

He went on to comment about his new found depth, admitting he is facing some selection headaches.

“Yes, it is true that I have some real selection dilemmas.”

“We have got three players out [on loan] — [Yaya] Sanogo, [Lukas] Podolski and [Joel] Campbell — so you imagine before the number of offensive players we have.”

“Now we have a good squad, compact, but of quality and with the competition it will be very hard.”

We hope this new found depth will be enough for Arsenal to push on as the season winds down. The lads looked good today, so let’s hope the outcome of the 97-98 season repeats itself.

Just think Arsene …. if you had :

    > strengthened the defence back in August

    > Used a decent dmf in the Autumn

    > Adopted a tactical defensive formation against the best opposition

    > Not selected all the play making non ball winners in midfield at the same time, thus using an unbalanced line up which lost us lots of points.

If we had gotten a DM(or showed faith in Le Coq) and a CB in the summer we would be challenging right now. Instead, we ‘wasted’ half a season.

It is not just a question of catching Chelsea we would have to rely on Man City dropping almost as many points- it is not going to happen but lets hope we can finish 3rd and avoid pre qualification for the group stage next season
