Captain Cesc Fabregas has won the World Cup with Spain, beating the Netherlands 1-0 in the final tonight. The match could not be decided in normal time, ending goalless after ninety minutes.

Fabregas also provided the assist for Andreas Iniesta, who scored with about three minutes to go in extra time.

It was a tightly contested match, with Robin van Persie playing the entire match, Fabregas coming on just before the start of extra time.

Fabregas had a few excellent chances to open the scoring for Spain, once being put through and another chance being the result of his direct run straight into the Dutch penalty area.

van Persie, in contrast, had a frustrating match as Spain’s defence held firm whenever a wave of orange shirts approached their penalty area.

The Dutch also had defender John Heitinga sent off in second half extra time for two bookable offences.

Holland were lucky to not have finished the match with fewer players, as a scrappy first half saw some pretty tough challenges on the Spaniards.

Fabregas becomes the fourth Gunner to win a World Cup, after George Eastham, England (1966); Emmanuel Petit, France (1998); Patrick Vieira, France (1998).

Gilberto Silva was already a world champion with Brazil when he joined in 2002, after beating Germany in the final.

Creepily, the result also gives Paul the Psychic Octopus a perfect record with his predictions for the tournament.
