In what his now his fourth loan spell in as many years, Joel Campbell has joined Villarreal for the rest of the season. The man who anchored Costa Rica’s fairytale World Cup run has had no such impact at Arsenal, struggling to really break into the side. Campbell managed just four league appearances, all as a substitute, and will be relishing this opportunity for regular first team football.

Campbell took to twitter yesterday morning to announce the deal long before it was officially confirmed via various reports later on in the day. Sky Sports and ESPN FC quoted Campbell from his personal website, where he expressed his delight at the deal.

Campbell says he is relishing the new challenge and hopes to make the most of his spell at the club.

“I hope to work hard to do things in the best way” he said.

“I want to spend these four months well and succeed here. I am very happy.”

The loan is of course a part of the deal which sees Villarreal centre back Gabriel Paulista join Arsenal – a deal that was, at long last, confirmed today.

I won’t bore you again with my admiration for Campbell, but I will leave a final farewell to Joel. He should do well in Spain and hopefully yet again get a chance next year at Arsenal. Make us proud Joel!

I really hope he comes back stronger than ever and gets a chance. He was never going to get it this year. Even with all our injuries he didn’t make it into the starting 11. And now with almost everyone back from injury we have a huge squad. No wonder we’ve now loaned out 3 of our attacking players.. He did sign a contract extension, though. So maybe when Rosicky or Poldi for example retire/leave he’ll be able to take his chance. One thing is for sure, though, we don’t need to buy any attacking players with the likes of Campbell, Sanogo and Gnabry coming through..
