Young Arsenal striker Chuba Akpom says he is confident of breaking into the Arsenal first team this season, and says he would prefer to stay and fight for his place in the squad rather than go on loan.

The young Englishman spoke after the Emirates Cup yesterday, saying the tournament was a good opportunity for himself and fellow youngsters. Akom believes he has what it takes to break into the first team at Arsenal.

“It’s really good preparation,” said Akpom of the Emirates Cup double-header in a Sky Sports report.”The experience for me and the other young players to get minutes and show people what we can do – we are all excited about the game at the weekend now.”

“It’s nice to see the young players doing well and the boss says he will always give opportunities to young players who are doing their job. The main thing for me is for a manager to have confidence and faith in me so for the manager to say that he isn’t after another striker is good.”

“But the hard work doesn’t stop there it means you have to maintain a place and there are a lot of good strikers and goals in the team so hopefully his season I can give it my all and be involved in the team.”

He concluded, saying he hopes he can mix it with the likes of Giroud, Welbeck, and Walcott for the centre forward spot in the XI.

“I’d prefer to stay here and fight for a place and give it my all and compete with the other strikers,” he added. “There is a lot of talent in the team but I think I am capable of competing and getting a place in the team, it’s all down to hard work.”

Good on young Chuba to remain confident and focused. With that attitude he is destined for stardom surely and he is showing he will be quite a player for Arsenal in the future. How much first team involvement he gets this season is yet to be seen, as it will take some doing to rise up the pecking order, but this lad has a good head on his shoulders.
