Arsenal have confirmed that young talent Alex Iwobi has penned a new long-term deal with the Gunners.

Iwobi, 19, impressed in pre-season as he starred and scored for Arsenal in the 6-0 drubbing of last year’s Ligue 1 runners-up Lyon, on the first day of the Emirates Cup.

A statement on Arsenal’s official website read:

“Everyone at Arsenal would like to congratulate Alex on his new contract and looks forward to his continued progression in the season ahead.”

Yesterday it was reported that Iwobi is set to go on-loan after the international break, where he is currently on-duty with Nigeria ahead of matches against the Democratic Republic of Congo and Cameroon.

However, despite vast competition for a first-team spot at Arsenal, he could get his chance when domestic football returns in a few weeks time; with the Gunners set to tackle Sheffield Wednesday in the Capital One Cup.

Arsenal may decide a loan-spell for the teenager is beneficial though as he would receive regular football but he’s already made his talents clear and could prove to be a valuable asset in the season ahead.

Iwobi starred for the U21 side last season, scoring nine goals in nine matches, and has continued his impressive form this term with two goals in five appearances for the second-string side.
