Arsene Wenger yesterday confirmed that Arsenal have nearly agreed terms with Theo Walcott over a new contract extension, saying a deal is “closer and closer.” The 26 year old’s current deal at the Emirates is due to expire in just over a year, and was initially said to be holding out for a higher wage.

Walcott scored the only goal in yesterday’s 1-0 win over Wolfsburg yesterday to help Arsenal lift the Emirates Cup for the first time since 2010. He endured a torrid time with injury over the past few seasons, but impressed upon his return in the closing stages of last season. He hit four goals in two games including one in the FA Cup final win over Aston Villa.

Wenger now says a deal to keep the player at the club is nearly in place. As reported by Sky Sports, he had this to say about the status of the deal:

“Not yet but we’re getting closer and closer,” he said.

“It was another goal for Theo and I’m not surprised by that, because I played him through the middle.”

He continued, saying he is confident in Walcott’s ability in front of goal, saying he hopes to keep the player as he has much to contribute to the club.

“I’ve always said that he’s a goalscorer because he has the movement, he has the timing of the run, the speed for the finishing, and he has an eye for taking his chances at the right moments.”

“When he gets into these positions, he finishes well. I believe that Theo will score goals.”

This marks yet another signal of intent by Wenger to keep his core group of players intact. Let’s hope Walcott can steer clear of the treatment table for the foreseeable future and keep banging in the goals.
