Despite declaring himself fit for first team action, Arsenal defender Sol Campbell was left out of the squad against Manchester United on Sunday.
The ommission led many to believe that the England defender no longer featured in Arsène Wenger's plans, with one fansite claiming that the centre-back was surplus to requirements at Highbury!
Arsenal manager Arsène Wenger has revealed that the reason why he left Campbell out was so that the defender could get match fit in training.
Wenger said: "The plan was for Sol to regain sharpness in training.
"To get him to work hard rather than sit on the bench. We have eight games now on the trot - game after game - and I will have to rotate in every game now without destroying the balance of the team and the belief of the team.
"That's why I am happy that he's there. You could see on Sunday we were on top but the longer the game went on the more you could see we lost some strength."
