Wenger defends style of play

Arsène Wenger has moved to defend his team's style of football, rejecting claims that his side lack the basic directness to challenge for the title.

Arsenal's over-elaboration has seen them take just one point from their opening two games against Aston Villa and Man City, a disappointing start to say the least.

But Wenger believes that as the season progresses, results will improve and change in style is not needed.

"We play the football that suits us. When you make the first mistake and you go 1-0 down, it is difficult to be clinical.

"It is the type of game that we would win if we were ready - but (Manchester City) fought very well and you cannot criticise their style.

"They were direct, but it is not a reproach, (because) they won.

"We play the game we do because it is the most efficient one to play.

"The trouble is that when we lose a game everybody says 'why do you not want to kick the ball forward?'

"We believe in our kind of game. In (Alexander) Hleb, (Tomas) Rosicky, (Thierry) Henry and (Robin) van Persie, we have the type of players who need the ball to be played on the ground."

"If you look at the last nine years we have played in the Champions League each time.

"You cannot suddenly say that we should follow the route of the football that Manchester City play, we would not be able to do that."

I agree. It's only our second game of the season. Fans should not give so much negative opinions.

No one is questioning about our style of play but the unfortunate thing is that we didn’t win any of two matches which we played so far & that is only because of our poor finishing which can be solved but I hope by that time we are not too far behind our rivals. I really don’t want us to be battling for 4th position I think club of Arsenal stature should only fight for title & above all we are so used to be on winning side that now we can’t tolerate to even draw a league game.

Tell them AW. That's how we play. You change that and we just have another team playing badly and not even guaranteed to win. (Bolton?!?) The team isn't bad. It just hasn't found that nack for luck that is so essential. We will find it, then we'll be up and running.

Had van Persie's shot gone in, it would have been a totally different story. Lets wait. It is still early days.
