Senderos speaks

Swiss defender Philippe Senderos has said that he is determined to earn back his place in the Arsenal side. It is expected that the inheritor of Tony Adams' number 6 squad number will be selected for tonight's Carling Cup match against Everton.

Senderos was on a good run of form going towards the end of the season and had an excellent World Cup, but has been hampered by injury since the start of the new season.

The central defender is choosing to reflect on his time out as a much-needed break from a hectic footballing schedule.

Senderos said: "At least I got to recover after a tough season and a tough World Cup.

"So it was good to have a rest and be able to come back fresher.

"You always have to take the positives out of a situation, that is what I do.

"It was really good to get action in the first team again, to come back and feel good.

"I feel very good physically now. Hopefully I can fight for my place."

Many Arsenal fans raised their eyebrows when it was announced that Senderos would be wearing former Arsenal captain Tony Adam's squad number.

Senderos said: "I am very happy and proud the boss decided to give me the number six shirt - but at the same time the only thing that really counts is how you do on the park.

"Of course people will say that the shirt is heavy because Tony Adams used to wear the number - but I just feel with the new stadium, it is like a new team and it is maybe a change of era.

"One thing is always the same at Arsenal - if you are playing well, then you will play, that is the way it is here.

"The boss has the problem, not the players.

"He has to choose who plays and if it is a problem for him, than that is a good sign.

"It is up to us to do well and make it hard for him.

"It is good for the club and the players, because you can only get better when you have competition."
