After a week long boycott of the media, Arsenal manager Arsène Wenger has revealed that the reason he reacted the way he did towards his counterpart Alan Pardew was because of a "disrespectful provocation".
The Frenchman regrets his actions, but also said that he is human like everyone else and that there was a reason for such a reaction.
Wenger said: "I wish we could have both done better and that is it.
"It is an incident that can happen in football and after 22 years on the bench I didn't accept what happened.
"The best is always to do nothing and not to respond.
"I will give my explanations for what happened when the time comes but I will say that there is always a reason for a reaction."
Wenger also explained his decision to not speak to the media for a week, saying that he thought that it was more important to concentrate on the team and what this side wanted to achieve this season.
Wenger added: "I chose not to speak to the media after the game and during the week because I believe there was no need to make any more out of it than what happened.
"Also I thought it was important for me to take the chance to reflect on the overall performance of the team.
"I wanted to give myself a week to assess the Everton performance and to prepare well for Liverpool, so I thought it was necessary to be quiet for a while and to focus on the team and what we want to achieve.
"It is not a media war or anything like that. The media has nothing to do with it. It is just that I thought it was a week when we needed to concentrate solely on internal issues."
