Arsenal manager Arsène Wenger said that his team had to be strong to come through with all three points against a resolute and determined Wigan side.
The Gunners lacked freshness and it showed for most of the match, with passes going astray and their usual rhythm and finesse severely lacking.
It was only towards the end of the game that substitute Francesc Fabregas provided an assist for striker Emmanuel Adebayor to slot home.
Wenger said: "It was a difficult game, Wigan were up for it. It could have gone for them but it went for us.
"We created chances but they had one or two and we needed to be strong to claim the three points.
"Sometimes when you play every three days you have problems getting into the game but it gets better."
The Arsenal manager also responded to claims that Wigan striker Henri Camara was fouled by Fabregas in the build-up to the Arsenal goal, but Wenger said that Fabregas had got the ball in his challenge on Camara.
Wenger said: "From outside it looked like Cesc got the ball."
