Wenger: I always felt we could come back

Despite being 1-0 down for the majority of the match against Wigan Athletic, Arsène Wenger says he always felt that his team would bounce back and win the match.

The Arsenal manager is also aware that his team are slow starters, with the Gunners having to come from behind to get a result for the majority of their matches at the Emirates this season.

Wenger said: "It is down to us to show more consistency.

"They were on top of us - but we never decide to put ourselves in that position.

"Everybody comes here and starts very well, whereas we find it difficult.

"But usually other teams drop in the final part of the game and that is where our character and resilience comes through."

The Arsenal manager said that the Gunners deserved their last-minute win.

He added: "I felt it was deserved because we fought until the last second.

"They've shown again fantastic fighting spirit and character, but we played against a good Wigan side.

"In fairness, they could have won as well because they hit the post at 1-0 and after, there were one or two situations for us and for them that could have gone both ways.

"It was the kind of game that you have after an international break where it's always difficult to start.

"We had a sloppy start, and in fairness, Wigan have shown that they are quality because I was impressed by their performance today."

The Frenchman also said that he couldn't comment on whether Wigan deserved a penalty late in the second half after Mathieu Flamini had hauled down Emile Heskey when the striker was through on goal.

Wenger said: "It looked like he (the referee) couldn't give it, but I think there was maybe one on the other side as well.

"It's very difficult to say, the referee was close, he could have given a penalty or not.

"It's not for me to decide that, you know."
