For a side that's never finished outside the top two for the good part of 8 years, Arsenal are now staring at a second consecutive fourth-placed finish.
They do however, have a chance of pipping Liverpool to third spot if they can get the better of West London rivals Chelsea today.
Arsenal manager Arsène Wenger has challenged his young team to show that they have improved on last year's performances, and take all 3 points from the current Premiership champions.
Wenger said: "You have to see as well the bigger picture, but of course people see only silverware.
"Third place is progress, but it is not enough because our progression has to be getting to number one again.
"What we can show on Sunday is that we can have the chance to fight for the title again next year."
Chelsea must beat Arsenal to have any chance of retaining the Premiership title, with Manchester United within touching distance of a ninth title.
Wenger added "If Chelsea want to win the title now, then they have to come to the Emirates and beat us, they have to beat also Manchester United.
"If they do these two things in the two weeks after going out of the UEFA Champions League, which was their main target, then you can say they deserve it."
