Arsenal boss Arsène Wenger has urged fans not to target Cole for abuse, urging them to put the past behind them, but he also admitted that the club did well over the transfer deal that brought William Gallas in part-exchange to the Emirates Stadium.
Wenger said: "I hope there is no resentment to Ashley as he did well for the club and ideally he deserves to get some respect.
"You want fans to pay respect to players who have played for you. What is over, is over, and you have to take that into account.
"Some players come back here and get very good treatment here.
"Patrick Vieira came here with Juventus and the fans chanted his name.
"It depends on the circumstances. People did not accept the way Ashley left but for me, it was a minor thing.
"He was educated here, he did well and we want him to get a fair reception. We want the fans to be 200 per cent behind our team which makes a difference.
"In the big games, your fans and your team have to be as one."
The Frenchman admitted that Arsenal did well over the £18 million transfer that saw defender William Gallas move in the opposite direction.
Wenger added: "Ashley wanted to leave. The only way we could act was to get someone else in as compensation and we are happy with what we have got."
