Now it's a bit like watching a Formula 1 race. Your car is in front and the second car is making up 1 sec per lap. Finally, they are on your bumper and each corner they get into a good overtaking position but you manage to survive that lap. It's 8 laps to go and dozens of corners left. It's nail biting. Are we going to survive to the chequered flag?

A guy turned up late for the game and sat next to me. He asked how things were going. I was immediately going to say "We're playing well but not scoring – same old story".

But for a moment I wondered for the first time what "playing well" really means. Does possession mean "playing well" or does it just mean your are in some kind of control?

Since I couldn't answer that immediately, I said, "It's a disaster, the strikers don't know each other and van Persie is marking Hleb out of the game."

"What do you mean," he asked. Well van Persie is playing as a second striker and coming deep and wide so Hleb, who has been doing that all season doesn't know where to go or what to do. It's also getting in Fabregas' way.

Fans get to know their team pretty well and over time, they can see signs that things are not going well. The fans had watched 40 minutes and knew where it was going. We've been there many times before. We have cheered the team on to get past these kind of patches.

But today the fans were getting very frustrated since Manchester United had won so they tried something new – they tried to wake the team up by booing. I can't remember the last time I heard that.

At half time a bunch of us felt pretty guilty about that and I guess the rest of the fans were feeling the same so the team got a big cheer on their return and Middlesbrough got booed as if to suggest it was Middlesbrough being booed all along.

Wenger, to his credit, went for the substitution early and boldly. Arsenal's only match winner in my view, Theo Walcott and Nicklas Bendtner came in for Bacary Sagna and Robin van Persie.

Sure Arsenal were unlucky but our main problem as I pointed out last week is that our attack is irrelevant. The formula for success is to buy the best striker you can on whom you can bet 25 goals a season and hope that midfielders get some.

At Arsenal, we are hoping that the entire team will score and it's clearly not working. It has to be said though that since van Persie got injured, every combination up front has been temporary so it's no surprise none of them can play with each other.

In the second half, Kolo Touré, who had been passing the ball to Fabregas all season realised that one of his strengths that picks him above Philippe Senderos is that he used to be allowed to bring the ball forward. So he started doing that and his bursts, along with Theo's became our best moves. In the end, he was rewarded with a goal that Mathieu Flamini helped him score but standing infront of the keeper.

Arsenal have been unlucky in these run of games. Eduardo da Silva injury when he was just becoming a threat, non-existent penalties and many not given for us and the unfortunately disallowed goal when would have killed this game in the first half.

Mido got sent off for a similar foul to what van Persie got sent off for in Europe last season, I think in both cases, neither player should have been sent off because they could not see the person they injured. But blood led to red card while Theo was tackled from behind in an attacking situation that should have been a red card but referee bottled it.

Arsenal are level on points with United with a poorer goal difference. United have a game in hand but as I said last week, a game in hand is not three points. Don't count it unless you've won it.

As we saw with United against Derby, it could have easily been a draw so we are definitely not out. There are hardly any soft teams in the league this year.

What is clear though is that the pressure is on us. We have to turn this around and find goals up front because Fabregas or Touré may not get a goal in the next game. Someone up front has to start scoring. It's not just a Premiership problem, it is a Champions League problem too.

Crucially, no player is getting stronger, we are getting tired and the demands of hunting draws at the last minute is wearing down a thin team. It caught up with Sagna today and Gallas is looking mentally drained.

Fabregas, Flamini and Gaël Clichy are working way too hard. The new signing that Wenger talked about is turning up to be more Touré than van Persie. van Persie is out of sync with the team and his sharpness is poor, while Walcott and Bendtner who are doing great cannot have enough time left to form any decent partnerships.

We either need luck or a bolt of magical telepathic powers to be given to van Persie, Adebayor and Hleb. Oh and some shooting boots for Hleb too.

Still optimistic but getting tired of jangling nerves and emotions. Another game like this may be too much. I have contemplated quitting putting my heart at risk over football many times at this point in the season after huge disappointments. Then I come back again. I'm sure it's the same for all fans. Maybe we will get a huge reward this season that could last us another 4 years.

Confidence has given way to concern, and concern to frustration. Now frustration is giving way to hope! The next step is either defiance, mathematics and then resignation or straight back to confidence. It will happen as soon next week so we don't have to wait long.

Luckily, we seem to wake up against big teams. So bring on Chelsea.

Still the best footbaling side in world football, though it may not win us a trophy this season the future is looking bright. Champions League is not beyond us. I think that pre season we would have settled for 4th again, but we have enjoyed the ride. Our season is defined by the injury to Eduardo.

Wenger does not need a prophet to tell him that what is killing Arsenal is tired legs...Arsenal kind of game involves alot distance coverage, fastness and lots energy, we dont kick and follow like chelsea , so Arsene wenger should stop being a stingy manager and buy players who are cheap but effective like sagna, since he cant spend BIG...it is obvious that those boys playing 4 competitions are tired cos wenger do not have bench to relief them sometimes,With all the money arsenal is making.Wenger has destroy the hearth of 10 million Nigerian ARSENAL fans

Do you know how much a ticket to watch Asenal ugliest football??The most expensive in the world.Do you know who is playing there??A young team and not maturity enough. Where is the money that we paid for a season ticket?Just to buy a kids.Is it deserve with amount of money that we paid??Offcourse not.3 season without anything for a team like Arsenal. I prefer to pay Tottenham ticket. Cheaper a lot than Arsenal and i watch a top star player like Berbatov, Keane etc.
They play such a good and pretty football.
Compare to Arsenal, Wenger tactics is useless.
Bravo Juande Ramos.
I am Arsenal fans but when i looked the way that Spurs play, i became fall in love with them.
I dont want to be Gunners fans againl.
When i watched them it made me frustated and always dispointed. Its because Arsene is stuborn.Adebayor not good enough for premiership, Diaby wastefull the ball. They always play when they in bad performances.
I hope you read this Mr Wenger and know how upset your fans in this condition.
Can all of you be patient?
But not for me.
C u Gunners.....

Why Wenger always play Adebayor while he still in bad performances. He played 90 minutes without subtitution.
Where is Arsene mind??
When i watch Arsenal every games, it makes me frustated with the way they played.
When i looked Totenham, MU or Chealsea , they plating qick and fast football.
When we compare to Arsenal, now they always delay the ball and waiting for someone and confuse to make a shoot. Why Arsenallllllll. Wenger is stuborn and Pat Rice too. Maybe they must looking elsewhere like Derby Country and developed young player there.
Arsenal have a money so why dont they use the money.
Money for a champion, to buy a top player.
What was your thinking MR. Arsene?

Perhaps those people who still have not realised that Senderos is playing well and that we are a better team with him would like to calculate the percentage of clean sheets we keep with him compared to without him?

There is only one reason for everything that is happening this season.
At the begining we were the title champion, too sure.
Middle, we gat hit by injuries upon injuries. So, If we dont win any throphy this season i wont feel a thing. Bcos we had a very big reason, which the other teams didnt have.
But i strongly advice Wenger nxt transfer season priority:
buy a 3 new deadly tall players - 1 x striker, winger (both side) & defender.
Sell Gallas, Eboue and Gilberto.
Thats what its gonna take to for Arsenal to win trophy's.

sagna allday long at right back eboue as nothing on him but yeah quaresma is the ideal player on the right wing plus he's got nothing to stay for in porto they win there league all the time and they dont reach far in the champions league so he needs something fresh a new challenge so wenger bring him in and veldso.I think sendros is ok he's bin more solid then toure

A winger like quaresma or ribery can replace eboue in future.eboue is a utility player,he is better at RB.i think wenger should try rotating sagna and eboue to see whose better at RB.

Eboue is a good player. But the worst person is Senderos. He is the most useless guy and I feel that he should be sold. He gave an own goal during the Villa match. And it took us a long time to equalise and thank god Bedtner did the job for us. Eboue hasn't created much mistakes as Senderos. I don't know whether he should go or not but who is there to replace him.

its more than we can say as fans. but proffessor wenger some thing has to be done for the team to win seven and draw one in the remaining games then we are champions. the team is too small make players stay after they are 30 years don't just see them off. i wacthed pires against zaragoza and said this man could still do us favours in such games we have drwn. the likes of bently, pennant, diarra could be winning these games when hleb is too tired fabregas also tired the list is endless. now that eduardo is injured go for villa, barbatov in the summer or benzima if u fail bring back henry on condition he can be benched at times.

Racial discrimination is not welcome here! BUT, Ade is really a joke. I miss Eduardo much, remember the goals he scored against Everton and Westham, one pass, brought down and shot, goal. as simple as that! Look at what Ade has been doing lately, he squandered every single chance we created, some were one-on-one. Hleb is a play maker, his scoring ratio doesn't matter, but he needs to shoot more when chances come (B'ham game). Yes, we'll be behind our team thick and thin, but criticism only makes the team progress. For those ManU or Chelski idiots commenting on this thread, we will beat you both trust me. Remember the last time we had a slump at the beginning of last season, where did we get our first win? Old Tradford. Now this year will be at the Bridge.

The premier league is going out of our hands. If we continue this form then we'll be out of the champions league soon enough. The one thing I'm sad about is that we have had a lot of chances than any other team. Secondly the refs these days make all bad calls. We could have got 3 points against Birmingham and also against Middlesbrough when the ref said Adebayor's goal was offside. Against Villa I blame Senderos.

Joel my friend, as for me, I have already quit! We will do nothing at the bridge. I just it wont be another 4-0 for us. I hate to admit, but,we do not have the strikers who can do a better job. With this in mind, I do not understand why wenger can not buy a quality striker worth 20 million pounds i.e. David Villa of valencia? Day in day out for the rest of the season,we will just be sufferring terribly because of the gunners under par performance!

yo thanx dude you just made me realise why av been supporting arsenal for as long as i can rememmber. what i think is that when your team is winning they need ur support and when they are going througha bad time/patch thats when they need ur support more than ever. its true manu are on top at the moment but what prof. arsene needs to install back into the players is that mental belief and courage and as for the strikers they need to realise what their job is, the likes of midfielders Fabregas, Hleb, rosisky(when hes fit)and others can not be always relied upon to score goals every game and the fact is that they are doing their job exceptionally well + that is what got as through some of our previous games eg against Man city, Milan etc. as for adebayor i read in an article- daily mail (where he actually said he was the new Henry that was when he was scoring in every game and that to says 2 things. 1. he is confident of his ability to score goals to win ganmes 2. he doesnt realise that only the arsenal fans can give him that title true he can score goals when hes on form but hes the type of player that needs over 12 chances to score one goal that to me is not a top striker. if you give eduardo or benzema(of lyon) or keanne(of spuds)or that over-rated ronnie they will convert 9 of those chances. at the start of the season when i saw eduardo play in one or two games i thought finally arsene has solved the problem of struggling for goals to kill of games against teams who pack their team bus in the 18 area and over load the box. however that problem has crept back again but this time we can at least be happy that we are drawing and not loosing those games. agree or disagree with me but i think we need a pure groomed trademark striker with a target one shot one goal striker we have that in eduardo but i think we all know the story on that and even when he recovers it ghonna be a different road altogether. to win the title in EUROPE and the premiership we need less types of adebayor and more of eduardo. there are eight games to play and i think the next 2 weeks will determine arsenals season and as genious as arsene is i think he knows he needs to add more depth to his team and am not talkn about players coming through the acedemy he needs to sign someone in the calibre of Benzema. i personally believe we can win the premiship and the champion league so thanx again for opening my eyes and as for this weekend i cant wait to break chealski home form just as we did to milan.

Joel interesting article, but RVP is going to be that man to get us the 25 goals per season once his injuries heal!! the main difference between Ade and Ronaldo in this years race is Ronaldo converts chances you put him in a high scoring sito and guaranteed 90% goal!! Ade on the other hand, has probablly the most chances of any striker in England and based on percentage ball by Arsenal probablly Europe!! His goals tell a Lie cause while its outstanding effort, if we had a clinical finisher which Eduardo looks set to become, They would probablly be breaking all sort of goal scoring records this year!! I Remember a game this season at the beggining where we won 1-0 but had 17 shots at goal and 9 on goal with 5 going to Ade!! and for sometime this was the case, nobody said anything cause we were winning, but now that its coming down to something like Goal Differences, will those high percentage chances come back and haunt us?

Its time to get tough all the other teams are getting stronger so are the spuds and l hate to say it but if we do no strengthen and bring in some real quality we will be out of the top four next season. If the money is there Wenger needs to spend it on players to replace, Senderos, eboue, gilberto, jens, diaby. For me this season is done we need to just make sure we finish third. Remember we had a good lead and we failed to make it count, so get real we not gonna do it this season. Come on Arsenal we will be back...

Wenger should just be prepared to drop players when they don't play well. Ade now thinks he is some hot shot who is undropable some1 needs to remind him he is not TH14, he hasn't achieved anything yet, he hasn't won a trophy for us. He should just get off that high horse and work hard on being clinical, he misses a lot more than he converts. He is an arrogant guy who is not as good as he thinks. If he scored half his chances he would have scored 30-40 GOAL BY NOW.

completely agree. Controlling the possesion doesn't automatically equate to playing well. We are very frustrating at times and if an opponent scores first against us it does feel like we are struggling as sometimes its difficult to see where one goals coming from never mind 2 especially when Ades having an off day. Van persie is completely out of sync with the rest of the team and Theo and Bendtner haven't been given long enough to form partnerships. Its not all doom and gloom though if we beat united then the title race is still very on.

First, the Milan game was an exceptional performance and a wonderful win, but Premier league teams know how to deal with and frustrate Arsenals expansive play by trying to nick a goal while putting 10 men behind the ball, Milan did not do that, perhaps they don't know how to, either way I don't think it's a good reflection or plumbline for our form in the EPL.

Our form in the EPL for the last 6 games goes WLDDDD. That's 7 points from a possible 18. When you're Arsenal you better believe that's a slump, the manager expects better and the players expect better. We certainly expect better. Something is wrong. Denial will get you nowhere. As will a negative attitude. Wenger will hopefully respond in the next few games and prove that when plan A doesn't work he can do something else besides throw on Bentner.

Ade is a goal scorer but not in the same way that Shearer or Torres are goal machines. Maybe I don't give him enough credit, maybe he has made a lasting improvement on last season when he was sometimes great, but mostly pretty average. I think this is just good form, though believe me I hope I'm wrong.

Some people are quite weird, writing all sort of strange stuff just because some recent games havent gone well, imagine someone saying Ade is not a goal scorer ( I wonder if he will be considered one after scoring 50 goals in a season). Stop moaning and get behind the boys who have started so well. I trust in the team getting a result against Chelsea.

It appears that the gunners are flat at the moment and need an injection of inspiration

Is it time for Wenger to play Walcott up front for the full 90 against Chelsea. Walcott offeres something slightly different from every other Arsenal forward in that he possesses electric pace and is very direct.

At present Arsenal's attacking play can become very one paced, Walcott seems to have really come on in the last few months and could offer the mood change that the gunners need

People will claim that he lacks experience and know how in the big games but if you are good enough you are old enough as football has proved on countless occasions.

Eboue is poor, I dont undestand why he gets prefference over Walcott or even Bentner. We were booing the officials, not the team you muppet - we'd never boo the team! Ade has regressed to thinking he is Tierry, he needs to just turn and shoot and not try and set up everyone else. This will change back again and he will start firing again. Helb has gone off the boil lately, his work rate and belief has never been the same since Carrew chopped him down (and should have been red carded) - he'll be back on form again soon. Persie will fight for his place, which means with a few more games he'll be back in from and we'll win the title and the Champions - next year the quadruple. For all you doubters, just fu*k off to tottenham and support them we dont need you - your the same tossers that wrote us off at the beginning of the season. We are on the up and will only get better.

Bentner, Eboue and Adebayor were very poor and very wasteful of possession in and around the box, atleast VP has the excuse that he's been out for most of the season, they do not. I know Boro were playing 10 men behind the ball, but as an attacking force we were poor. I can't see where the goals are going to come from. Adebayor has been in great goal scoring form, but I don't think he's ever been the out and out goal machine we're in need of, Bentner should not be playing for a Champions League side and every other striker is injured or cannot be called a goal-machine striker. Troubling times, my heart hopes we cling on and results go our way, but my head says that we have nothing left in the squad and we may be left with nothing come May.

Mido deserved a red card for dangerous play. Under what circumstances is it ok to to try and win a ball that is head height with your feet?? It's dangerous play, Clichy had blood all over his face to prove it. What if a stud went in his eye? You don't have to break someone's leg to get sent off you know.

Arsenal blew the title when Wenger started fucking about in the FA Cup against Man U. Never looked the same since.

When Adebayor had his lucky streak, most supporters became blind to the truth-this guy's just lucky, he has no skill. The difference is seen. When the chips were down, Ronaldo had a moment of magic and buried it. Adebayor, like Henry, will bring problems to Arsenal. Both of them had more personal records than team achievements. Even though Henry's goals won cups, others were also getting double digit goals (Pires, Wiltord, Ljundgerd Kanu, Bergkamp), but now Wenger has bought players that magnify the role of strikers than complement them. Torres is scoring goals thay are crucial. Adebayor got this far because the midfield can't score goals and he has been well placed by them. Many forget that Fabregas had two clear chances he missed because of poor finishing. But unfortunaetly Wenger does not take advice. That's the downfall of a man anytime.

the day at brum was the day we lost the title when the greedy b;;;d ade was in on goal , looked right and seen bhentner with an easy tap in decided that fame greed and the golden boot was more important than the team. on the day when a better and mote talented player nearly lost his leg it says it all about adebayer.

What an excellent article, well done Joel, superbly written and our situation and feelings summed up expertly. The Van Persie marking Hleb observation is also very interesting, and not something I thought of during the match, but you're right. Hard to know what to make of Alex right now, he looks tired and a little down on confidence, but we need him more than ever to unleash the magic. In Alex's defence though, why is he being played left-wing?, why is it Hleb that gets pushed around the pitch, can't Eboue go and contribute next-to-no end product on the left instead of the wing, rather than effecting our most crucial attacking cog. You must keep your best players in their best positions, and we can't afford for Hleb to be pushed out to the left-wing, or Cesc to be pushed onto either wing as happened at Wigan.

Still arsenal has a chance to win the race for the title if and only if arsene is willing to take right decision at the right time.Specially the coming games with his big rivals are to crucial in the race for the title.Arsene should not be frastreted in giving chances for bentner in place of unsucssful adebayor.

I have to say that I think Mido's foul was a red card, as was RVP's a few years ago. If you go in to a tackle on the ground with studs up and catch the guy on the shin or knee, then we would expect to see a red card for that. Therefore it has to be the same when the foot is head high. To me it does not matter if it was intentional or not, it was reckless and dangerous and therefore worthy of the punisment.
