Did Arsenal surprise you?

Did Arsenal surprise you?

By Joël Che on Tuesday, April 1, 2008

At 1-0 down, my experience from the last few games led me to raise my hopes only as far as getting a draw. At 1-0 down with 10 men, I wanted to stop watching because I felt we would lose. At 2-0 down with 10 men, memories of White Hart Lane and Old Trafford led me to a fear of total collapse.

Arsenal left the pitch at half time with their heads down. I wondered if there were ever any real motivational speeches in the dressing room at Arsenal and whether they ever worked. When the players returned to the pitch and started the second half, I felt sure that there weren't. Then with 30 minutes left, strange things started happening.

The opposition made a mistake in a set piece and Arsenal punished them. Surely not! We don't do that. Then Aleander Hleb was brought down and the referee gave a penalty. The referee gave a penalty to Arsenal away from home? After all the terrible decisions lately, I could hardly believe it. Surely not!

Then Arsenal got a slice of luck with two deflections and then a goal. Lucky Arsenal after all the bad luck in the past few weeks – surely not.

Who would have thought, given our run recently that Arsenal would score from a set piece, score 3 goals in half an hour, get a good decision and win from coming behind with 10 men. Did it surprise you? It did me. Maybe the season is about to turn again.

Evidently, winning an away game from 2 goals down with 10 men is better preparation for Liverpool than if Arsenal had won 1-0 in a straightforward game.

I cannot get carried away though because Robin van Persie still shoots like a defender as he is still rusty and Emmanuel Adebayor still has the ball control of a tractor. In fairness, van Persie got himself into positions that no Arsenal player except Francesc Fabregas has been able to get into during tight matches and looks like he is integrating well. Hleb still suffers from his presence but it was a little better at the Reebok Stadium and Nicklas Bendtner still plays without the team's support for his strengths.

Bacary Sagna is the only Arsenal player who could make it to the team of the season. Gaël Clichy and Mathieu Flamini may make the bench. It is therefore an uphill task for Arsenal to do well without Sagna. But we have to hope that as the defence is depleted, the attack will step up. I hope van Persie starts scoring in the next game. Failing that, our season has no hope.

When Taylor took Eduardo out many people said Taylor was not a dirty player and I felt that was irrelevant. My view is that if you lunge into a challenge, even with the best intentions, you have no control over what could happen to the other player.

In my view, anyone who does that should see a straight red and get a minimum of three games. Abou Diaby deserves his red card and ban and I hope he never does that again especially after seeing what happened to Eduardo. We could say a lot in Diaby's defence but it would be no different than what people said in Taylor's defence.

There is nothing to be said about the following games against Liverpool or the title race. The team is weird right now and difficult to read or predict. A lot can happen in the next 6 games to change things but I doubt that much will happen.

What is most important now is that if we lose everything, we should do it gracefully rather than suffer an embarrassing collapse. If we win anything then it would be incredible.

Gooner4life all I'm trying to do is get him to understand all right. If you think we gonna win the champions league then we gotta start defending well because that is where are weakness. But dude I'm sure you'll change your mind about the epl if we win it. If we have chance of winning against Liverpool then we can win against Man Utd. I've been reading all the comments. First Gilson. You've got a valuable point about why Wenger sold Baptista. If he was there then he would have provided a much stronger attack. Another Jimi it isn't James who is a racist. It is the people who hate Ade. Just because he hasn't scored for some time you hate him. All his haters will hate him even if he manages to score above 30 + goals this season. Just because he is African and is from Togo and is black some of hate him. We won at Old Trafford thanks to him and if it wasn't for his goals we would be next Newcastle in the epl and be in the Uefa Cup. Just admire the talent he has got. When Persie was injured he took up the responsibility and we are in the epl coz of him. I meant the position. Pls. we are a team and do good for the team.

Well some people agree with me. I didn't say anything bad. All I did was say that I didn't like him and his article. I don't mind what Kennada says coz he expressed his views. Kennada didn't insult anyone atleast. Robin has got a typical loser emotion. He didn't have to tell me to shut up. I criticized JOel coz his article was dum and the way he said abot Diaby what what I didn't like. Alright a red card, fine the decision is done so leave it but Diaby is an Arsenal player and we've got to treat him like one. I don't know what he means by an impact sub. Doesn't he realize that we gave our best against Bolton and that this luck cannot continue forever that too against Liverpool. If you think Walcott has to be a sub then we would have been much below in the table coz we would have lost to Birmingham. When no one was able to score against a team that is on the verge of being relegated it was that youngster who saved us. Eboue should be a sub because he played bad against Chelsea and against Bolton I don't know coz I didn't see the match and I don't even know whether he played or not. I'm not saying anything bad about you Robin. Alright I've insulted you quite a lot of times here but I never started it. I did start that Ronnie one but this one I have no idea why you got angry at me. Kennada also disagreed with me but he didn't insult me. Anant and Falkstog also disagree with you. I apologize for involving your parents too now but that was because I got really mad at you for something that I did not do that bad. Robin you are just disgracing yourself here and no one agrees to your comments at all. I ask you how many people have supported you? So many people may have disagreed with me also but you are the only insulting one. Pls. don't start a fight again coz I am not such a bad guy. I did not insult Joel or you. I had the balls to apologize and yet you criticized Ronnie again. I have never uttered a word about Hleb coz I don't like starting fights.

in 2003 when we lost the title to the Manc it all happened after Vieira got injured n then Sol was suspened playing people like luzny in central defense. The game when we were leading at the reebok 2-0 the some how drew 2-2 was the pivitol point of giving away the title.if u believe in fate like i do it is the point that reignites out season this time.we have a small squad which certainly has to be strengthened but we can still limp t the title.Rosicky need someone injury free to back him up,we need some that can actually shoot to replace Hleb in games where he looks like championship material and Theo has to grow up.

Diabys tackle was not a red, it wasn't as bad as what ashley cole only got booked for a week earlier. The refs just needed to make an example of someone, and its not going to be a man u or chelsea player, so arsenal is the only possible solution, Its also bullshit how man u thrash roma last year and draw them again this year, chelsea get fenerbache, and as soon as arsenal hit terrific european form by beating AC, they draw an english side. Sadly im beginning to think that all these draws and decisions are slightly more than a fortunate coincidence, the odds are always against us and we never bitch or moan, we just improve, the comeback was a fantastic display of character, not only do we play the best football in the world, we can win where we need to, however i do feel we need to add depth to our squad by adding some more quality to the arsenal bench.

Just a question, in 2006 Wenger is desperate after Julio Baptista. The player decides to go to Real Madrid, Wenger says how disappointed he is, but there's nothing he can do about it.
In 2007 he gets Baptista and when the season is over he lets him go. Can someone explain that to me?
As far as I'm concerned, he should be adding to the squad and not subtracting.

When Mourinho took over Chelsea in 2004, Aresnal was at its peak and no one knew what would follow that same year (Arsenal's collapse).
One of his first statements was that Arsenal was a great team but didn't have depth in its squad and therefore could not compete with the best teams like Man Uninted,Milan, Barcelona and others.
At the time, I thought it was ridiculous. Looking in retrospect, I see that this is Wenger's main weakness and the crucial factor that will always undermine Arsenal's great potential.

I don't see the point in naming players Arsenal should sign, it's a waste of time. Wenger's style is to stick to his guns and nurture the current squad. If Arsenal do sign someone in the summer, it will either be someone you haven't heard of, or otherwise someone you may have heard of but hasn't yet caught the interest of the big guns. So there's never any point in naming already established stars coz they won't be coming to the Emirates full stop.

One thing that has surprised me is the amount of fans calling for Adebayor's head and taking about selling him. he has been magical this season. Ok he has missed a few chances but there is a learning curve to becoming a great striker and the guy has had a fantastic season. He holds the ball up brilliantly and his goal at WHL was for me, one of the goals of the season. If we take his goals away we would be fighting for a UEFA cup place, so lay off him. The same fans slagging him off, will be the same people who will jump for joy when he scores 30+ next season.

I too was hoping for a draw. And when the second half began, i wished that we dont lose 3 to 4 nil. 2-0 was embarassing enough anyway.Almunia saved a wonderful Cahill chace that was sure to make arsenal's title hopes RIP. I am personally thrilled after such a performance and hope that we win our next four games in a row:liverpool, liverpool, liverpool and of course, manchester UTD.

About diaby's tackle...im sure that he made an honest attempt to block the ball, though apparently so was taylor when he snapped eduardo in 2. Diaby's tackle could have resulted in the same way, and these rash tackles should be cut out, so i think a red card was right.

One thing I would please like to plead with some Arsenal fans here for is that there must always be opposing views to bring balance. The fact that many of you 'love' Arsenal does not mean you should shout down or even ABUSE those whose comment you don't agree with. This is a side that has squandered the lead and is more likely to lose a title that was virtually theirs because of immaturity and carelessness. IT IS VERY PAINFUL AND MANY WHO HAVE BEEN EXPECTANT FOR THREE SEASONS HAVE CAUSE TO BE ANNOYED. Please let everyone's view be respected 'cos he or she has a point. Things are not going too well now and no matter how much you 'love' Arsenal, it's serious cause for concern. You don't even consider the players. Many are tired of cupless seasons and might want out. For example 'cos Fabregas is speaking good in the press doesn't mean he's not fruestrated with not winning silverware what with pressure from Spain. Many of you might not care if Arsenal Win Silverware or not but it does not mean there are others who don't. Arsenal is not just a Premeirship Side but a SILVERWARE WINNING one. Also as Mr. Conny rightly said, it's a great opportunity that the posting's opened up. Let's make good use of it.

Because of the angle he came from and where he slid to; I thought Diaby was trying to block the ball from being passed so it wasnt a conventional tackle. That is why I think his foot was raised. So maybe we shouldnt be as harsh on him.
Either way after he connected he should have got sent off.

I think we should not criticise Joel since he has a point. The bolton game was a real stinker and a true Arsenal fan must have felt trully let down at 2 goals down. The boys simply have to understand that we have to take early but full control of games always. Chasing a game has never been any of our strong points. Bolton may be our bogey team but we are the ARSENAL! Simply incomparable to such misfits! Common you gunners! Roll them up and lets do another on the kop!!

Studs up, airborne, and Diaby wasnt even close to the player. To me that warrants a red card. There are some referees in England who would have given a yellow but following Ashley Cole and Martin Taylor's tackles I feel they will be cracking down on dangerous tackling.

One positive thing about the sending off was the manner in which Diaby walked off. No amateur dramatics, no hissy fits, just walked off. For that I applaud him.

I really don't like this guy Joel Che. What a loser. I do not want to hear his stupid views about Arsenal. I feel that Diaby's challenge was not a such a bad one. A straight card that too when nothing happened to the player is bad. I never said anything to Taylor because what Taylor did was what any other player would do. He did sidetackle properly but Eduardo's position in which he was standing was wrong. OF course the main reason I blame Taylor was that there was no need to to do the sidetackle. Well Taylor did deserve a card and Taylor is supposed to banned for his life but Wenger retracted his comment because he realised this situation. I agree Diaby is not good at all but he is in Arsenal so he is an Arsenal player and we have got to back him up. Jonathan Che has no right to say about Diaby and that he deserves it or not.
