Peyton reminds us of Lehmann's achievements

Goalkeeping coach Gary Peyton has paid tribute to departing keeper Jens Lehmann, saying that the German international leaves the club on a high.

Lehmann was Arsenal's first choice keeper during the unbeaten season, and was also one of the key players in their 49-game unbeaten run.

Peyton, who arrived at the club at the same time as Lehmann himself, says that the big German's professionalism and experience will be missed.

He reiterated the fact that Lehmann had achieved alot in his first three years at the club - an unbeaten season and a Premier League title in his first, an FA Cup in his second and a Champions League final in his third, during which he was also voted the tournament's best keeper.

He said: "I am sorry to see him go. We both came at the same time and found ourselves at a big club. David Seaman had just left having been a great keeper for Arsenal and Bob Wilson had just retired having been a great goalkeeping coach.

" So we sort of looked at each and thought 'hang on we'd better win some trophies'.

"The first season could not have gone any better with the unbeaten run. The second season was very good and Jens had a great display as we won the FA Cup.

"In the third season we went to the Champions League Final and he was voted the best keeper in that. And remember he also took the German keeper's jersey from a legend, Oliver Kahn.

"For me Jens is a total professional and he is a character. He is a lovely man off the field and on the field he has an edge that means he demands the best of everyone alongside him.

"He is driven and, at 38, there will be teams ringing him up asking if he'll play for them. So I think he can leave Arsenal with his head held high."

Jens was a great buy for Arsenal and while he had his quirks and eccentricities, he was above all a top class keeper. He'll be missed but his contribution over the last few seasons won't be forgotten. Good luck in the Euro's and next season in Germany Jens!

Lehman although at times a fool was a great entertainer, his save from raul at highbury is his best for arsenal, in my mind hes better than almunia and fabianski rolled into 1, we better get someone good because if we want to contend with teams that have keepers like reina, cech and van der sar we need to get another keeper similar to Lehman

He was really strong at 2003/2004 season. Unbeaten at English Premier League, what a great achievment.
