Gilberto: Win trophies if you want a pay rise

Midfielder Gilberto Silva today told his team mates to start helping the club win trophies if they wanted a pay rise.

He was responding to comments from Robin van Persie, who had earlier said that the club were too rigid with their wage structure and hence stars like Mathieu Flamini were leaving to go to other clubs.

But Gilberto says that this was the wrong attitude to take, and that players had to earn pay rises by winning trophies for the club.

The Brazilian World Cup winner said: "When you win things you achieve more than anybody else. It follows that you get better contracts and more money.

"I cannot blame them if they have a good contract at another club but I still believe if they stay at the club and have a good season they could do a lot for the club and themselves. Then try new things.

"Most of the players who leave miss the club for lots of reasons. The lifestyle at Arsenal is fantastic. You get so well looked after.

"Next season will be very important for the club and the players.

"They must win something to keep the ambition of everybody and to maintain the hope of every player.

"If we don't win anything next year it will be difficult to keep everybody happy. If you don't see any possibility of winning the title they will change their minds."

i have been highlighting the personal qualities of Gilberto for a long time , he is quite simply the best captain available to arsenal , this poor guy endured very negative comments last season , indeed from many arsenal fans, this guy is an absoulte gem to have in our squad we simply must keep this man , what an example to the younger players he must be yes i would make him captain or at the very least club captain. remember players like Gilberto simply do not exist in the modern game where money is sadly the god of so many . keep him enjoy him love him - we will not see the likes of him again

Great comment sir. You've said it all. God bless you. The most painful thing is that Hleb and Adebayor who missed chances that would have won things for us are the ones unsettling the club currently. Hope Arsenal win trophies next year.

This is the guy who wasn't Captain last season. Is it me or could have we won something had Gilberto been Captain. He isn't like Gallas in so many better ways. For sure he isn't talkative but 1. He is the kind of Captain who speaks rearly but makes you believe and 2. Sometimes he doesn't need to usher a word but you know he got ur back, come rain or sunshine. The young lads could learn alot 4rm the World Cup Winner.

Big ups to Bert! Not a fan of him as a player but that's some serious sense he's talking. Hope the rest can take note!

Spot on, players such as sagna have deserved their new extension, but where does RVP get off? LOL Dont get me wrong i think he is a good player but when he has had an injury free season where he makes an impact then maybe he should have an opinion

spoken like a professional that he is. meanwhile, robin van sickbag who has won nothing for arsenal but an FA cup years ago dares to criticise his employers after playing less than half the games available.
if any of us called in sick as often as he did we'd be fired a long time ago.
gilberto's a legend wth a true love and respect for arsenal and wenger.

I hope Gilberto stays on for next year. He is one real professional.

Even tough Ade went beyond 30 goals this season, he does not deserved his 80k demand. TH14 earned as much as he wanted because he won trophies for the club. If you win trophies, the club win money (and broadcasting as well), so basically all parties got more money, that is as simple as that. No trophies, no money.
