Gilberto could be on his way

Midfielder Gilberto Silva is currently in negotiations with Greek club Panathinaikos with regards to a move.

The Brazilian World Cup winner had been second choice last season but had always stated his desire to stay on at the club and fight for his place.

Acting managing director Ken Friar said: "As far as I know the player and the agent will travel to Athens to meet with the Panathinaikos people.

"If Gilberto reaches an agreement then we will reach an agreement."

GOOD LUCK IN GREECE GILBERTO. I WANT HIM TO STAY HE IS A GOOD PLAYER FOR US. WE NEED TO REPLACE HIM WITH SOMEONE LIKE Abdou Razack Traoré. A YOUNG MIDFIELDER WITH ALOT OF POTENTIAL, HE'S ONLY 19 AND ALREADY ONE OF THE BEST PLAYERS IN THE NORWEIGON LEAGUE!

Really sad news indeed, Gilberto is a true model professional, there is no £ price that can go with the experience he brings to our young squad & i only wish he could stay on until the end like Bergkamp. Whatever decision he makes i only have admiration for such a top player and wish him all the best.

I can only echo the views of other posters. I love Gilberto. I love his attitude. I love his consumate professionalism. However his better days are behind. It is probably better for him, his career and for Arsenal that he seeks patures new. I wish him all the earnest best.

There must be more to this than meets the eye. He apears to be saying & doing all the right things yet he is still on the way out.

Wegner knows what he brings on and off the pitch. If I had to guess the only point of contention between the two parties was over the Captain role.

I agree, though, that I would love to keep him!

He's an experienced player. He's great. I love watching him play. It sucks how we're losing a very dedicated player. Best of luck to you Gilberto, thanks for all the amazing contributions to Arsenal. You will be missed.

He will be really well in Athens. We 'll treat him like a king. Panathinaikos is making a new start (100 years celebrations for the club). We wish you good luck for your team and hoping to meet you guys high up in the last stages of the CL.

It would be a loss if he leaves but if he leaves we would be even less experienced and we would have to BUY a replacement DM to take his place unless Alex Song can claim a spot next season. I'm so happy I get to see him play with Cameroon Olympic team cause they're playing exhibition games in HK. w00t.

First of all no one can question the experience. Then he should do well at Greek championship as it's at a lower level than Premiership. No league has the pace of the Premier League. What I'm sure for, is that Gilberto has definitely two more years of top class football as in 2010 there is the World Championship and he would give anything to be there. After all that's why he is leaving. He wants regular first team football. Good luck mate.

omg! last year it was ljunberg, henry etc. this year flamini, lehman, maybe hleb and adebayor. if we lose great players every year i will get a heart attack or something.

but as always we perform amazingly well somehow. wenger must be really good.

i am happy to see that gilberto is still a well respected player...Panathinaikos is surely one of the most well-known european clubs, and definately the most well respected greek club in Europe...let's hope he ends his career there in glory in a great club!

I think Diaby will join Cesc in midfield next season. The good thing is Arsene always has solutions to the positions that open up. But if it will be enough for a title.. looking forward seeing the best football in the EPL again in september!!!

I am a Panathinaikos fan and all I can say is that I am so happy he is coming to us

I think your words of love are the best reward for him and the years he spent in your team
I can assure you he will be loved here as well
Arsenal is a big team with a great manager
Wenger knows what should be done..

And something else
Gilberto welcome to Panathinaikos
It is an honour to have you with us for three years

This is a HUGE mistake. We only only have one experienced quality DM now. Gilberto (World Cup, Champions League, FA Cup). He is the consumate professional. People do not see the subtle aspects of his game nor do they see the leadership he provides the young players. If he leaves I say Congrats and thanks for many years of dedicated loyal service. Gilberto you are class- on and off the pitch!

I really feel the pinch now..It never happened when there talks of hleb leaving but Gilberto, It hurts...It like he was always there for us if things go well with our young team...but nevertheless I would really wish if he can stay on...but whatever decision he makes he will always be a true Gunner..by heart & by game

For a team thin on veteran leadership, it's a mistake to let Gilberto go. There will be a point this season when injuries will become a factor and Gilberto will be missed. Even if he doesn't see the pitch, his value as a role model and teacher to our Young Guns cannot be underestimated and is well worth his wage. I hope this doesn't come back to bite or haunt. Tenho saudades do voce, Gilberto! Boa sorte!

now we have lost him and flamini,
we should buy 1 proven DM for example Yaya toure cos his links with kolo and barca already have 2world class DM not including him.
And denilson and diaby should also help to fill in.

Another Experinced first team player is leaving.
he's one of the best holding midfilders and was part of our invincible team. why not keep hold of him arsene, im sure the likes of denilson & song can learn from him.
IM NOT HAPPY

Really sad news Gilberto has been a wonderful servant for Arsenal... a fantastic example to all the other players at the club ... this man has set new standards of behavior at the club .. he has worked with humility style and grace ... we will not see the likes of this very special human being again ..... i personally still hope he stays with us ....and really really appreciate all he has done for Arsenal.. God Bless GILBERTO
