Gallas: I will be a better captain this time around

By Jonathan Chong on Tuesday, August 19, 2008

Defender William Gallas has said that he's pleased to still be Arsenal captain this season, and that he's learnt from his mistakes from the previous captain.

The Frenchman says that Arsenal fans will see a better captaincy, which has come under question numerous times last season.

He also took time out to praise the current crop of youngsters at the club, acknowledging the potential in his young charges.

Gallas said: "I am very pleased to carry on as club captain this season.

"It was my first season as captain last year, and although I am 31 now, I am still learning.

"I really enjoyed the responsibility last season, everyone could see that, and I tried to do the best job I possibly could.

"It was a really positive experience and this season I have to use that, and carry on doing my best for the team.

"I know a lot more about the job now thanks to last season.

"It is true that we have the objective of doing better than we did last season, so we have to keep on improving, that has to be our aim.

"We are a young side and some more promising youngsters have come through for this season, but they have all got the quality which you need to have if you play for Arsenal.

"If you play at this club you must be ready to play at the very highest level."

I still have a doubt in my mind that Gallas is going to improve this season. We all saw him on saturday shouting rudely at the other players. Instead of giving them advice and even thanking them for not allowing in the equalizer after he made a mistake, he was busy shouting. If he could not give advice, I think he should just keep quiet. There is no need of unsettling those youngstars without whom our defence will be so porus. Gallas will never learn.

Clacko re watch the video it was Djourou's fault.... not Gallas. Djourou let the marker free and then luckily had speed of recovery. Im happy Gallas had a go at him.. Djourou should learn from Gallas. I would rather have passioate captain that takes all his defeats to heart and cares for the team than a pansy like Henry was. As much as I love him and always will he was not a captain he never shouted got stuck in and showed passion! I love Gallas as captain he is like Keane at Utd or Ince a passionate player who cares!

I don't think we really need further proof that he is not fit to be captain - we have seen enough. I hope he can prove us wrong and do better than last season, but I think even if he improves it is glaring that it was a mistake in the first place to appoint him captain and this has to be rectified sooner rather than later.

Last season he really did not perform as a captain should, he did not give guidance or advice to our young team and thus i thought that he should not have been captain for this season. However, Wenger decided to and from watching the first game i have to say that it seems a bit of a mistake. In our first game we had to play Djourou at the back and plaudits must go to him because he was outstanding at the back yet our captain still managed to have a go at him for clearing the ball off the line after Gallas had made a mistake! What is he thinking? That was clearly his mistake that led to the opportunity and other than congratualting a young player on his clearance he gave him an earful, i was just happy to see that Johan gave him some back and good on the lad.
Any more of his outbursts and i think it would prove that he is not the person to captain and nurture our young team!
