Wenger: Recession will have an effect on January transfers

Manager Arsène Wenger has commented that the economic recession currently engulfing the global economy will have an effect on football clubs.

The January transfer window is fast approaching and all eyes will be on Wenger to see which players he will be bringing into the club, but the Frenchman urged fans to be patient once again as he indicated that he could bring in nobody.

Wenger said: "The economic situation will affect the game, of course it will.

"It won't [affect me] because at the moment I'm not spending anything on any player.

"I don't know [if the credit crunch will affect the January transfer window] but it maybe doesn't affect the super-rich. They are Manchester City at the moment.

"And if Chelsea don't buy, it is because they have decided not to buy. They can certainly afford to buy. I wouldn't think that they cannot afford to buy. They can.

"But it's difficult to say what will happen in the transfer window. I compare it a little bit with what is happening on the stock market. It's always difficult to predict whether it will go up or go down."

In my opinion, Mr Wenger, if you want to achieve something this season, you simply have to buy.
