Manager Arsène Wenger has praised defender Johan Djourou and said that the Swiss international is in contention for a first team place.
Wenger admitted that Djourou was now challenging the more experienced central defenders at the club for their first team position.
He said: "Johan Djourou is not comparable to the player he was six months ago.
"He has gained in personality, in determination and in quality. I spoke with the Swiss national team coach last week and I was telling him how good he is.
"He is pushing all the other players [at Arsenal]. At the back you want players who are strong in the duels and strong in the air.
"Johan's size is a big advantage. He is among the top quality."

Good to hear. Gallas and TOure - Mobile DC's but not physically and aerially dominant - they were both at their best when paired with just such a player - TOure/Sol and Gallas/Terry. Djouru has the body to be a bison at the back.

could be some propaganda here. wenger kbows his defending is terrible, he may be saying this to justify not spending any cash on his defence in jan.
or maybe johan has improved greatly. he certainly looked light weight, slow and unreliable before, despite his size. who knows
