Wenger offers reasons for Eboue's drop in performance

Manager Arsène Wenger has offered his reasons for defender Emmanuel Eboue's sudden drop in performance levels on Saturday against Wigan.

The Ivory Coast international was subsequently booed by the home crowd when he started becoming a liability to the team.

Wenger said: "Firstly he was a bit tired, secondly he was in a situation where it was a bit nervy for people because we were only 1-0 up and thirdly, for once, all the media stood behind him.

"There has been a unanimous reaction and for me that is very positive. They could have said 'oh but you have made two bad passes' but I must say all football people have given a very strong response in his favour. That may have made the fans realise they have gone too far.

"This situation can happen to anybody and if he deals with it he can be stronger. It is difficult if your home crowd is against you. But what can you do?

"It is a public job and in our job you have to deal with all sorts of responses that you get from people.

"Of course I was disappointed. But that does not really count, what does count is your performance on the pitch and how well you respond."

Wuntu mate, dont you think thats a bit pessimistic? last season we showed exactly what we can do. we beat milan in the cl, got to the semifinal of the carling cup and were inches away from the the premiership trophy. we can do it guys, and i trust in arsene and the club. GO ARSENAL

Um... simmer down lads! Our team that lost to Porto wasn't anything remotely resembling our 1st team. Stop crying and man up!

We are 8 points from the top (8!) Liverpool is a thin squad and is 1 Kuyt hamstring / ankle sprain away from dropping some serious points. Presto magico 7 points. Eduardo's coming back, Nasri is on the bounce RVP is lookign good. More positives than negatives on the horizon so chin up. PS: How quickly we have all forgotten how instrumental Eboue was in our CL run and eventual loss to Barcelona! Much like Drogba did, he will shed his diver tage and become a consistent player. Midfielders and GK's get over exposed for simple mistakes.

How can a team that beats Manchester United and Chelsea loose to Porto ?. I hope Arsenal players are not of the opinion that no matter what happens, they will still earn their massive wages and buy their flashy cars. These boys have to know what it means to play for The Arsenal first and foremost.

We have a sub standard team and we can't compete in any competition with a realistic chance of winning. We haven't won any trophies since '05 and this team is much much weaker than 4 years ago so lets forget about winning trophies and just be happy finishing 5th.

I agree with gunnerjc regarding bendtner - and I would add arrogant and lazy - why does Arsene keep playing him? and usually for the whole 90 minutes - can we have Gibbs and/or Simpson instead?

Sure, I was angry last night. But Porto was exactly the place to field a weakened side. After we were knocked out of the carling cup, this was the last chance this season for our youngsters to gain important experience. It was also the perfect place for eboue to regain his confidence.

I think wenger needs to put on a brake on his thoughts of the future, and instead look at the present, thats all. I agree with gunnerjc..nick has no place at arsenal. Neither do i think does denilson. As for eboue, i dont know. he's a really on-off player recently. i think his 06-07 season was the best, i was absolutely unpassable.

Tonight Arsenal has reached a new low with their performance against Porto. I did not think that was possible after the game against Spurs.
This has been the shortest season ever, my wife will be happy!

ive just watched the porto game and am gutted .. arsene needs to rethink things . that was not the place to send a weakened side. and finally nic bedtner has no place at a club like arsenal he is soft ,with a bad touch, unable to finish ,gutless and an embarrassment to the club.!!!
