Manager Arsène Wenger has likened midfielder Abou Diaby to Arsenal legend Patrick Vieira.
Vieira's game was typified by strong, crunching takles and rampaging runs forward into the opposition's defensive areas. Whilst Diaby still has some way to go yet, Wenger feels that the youngster should use Vieira's game as an example.
Wenger said: "There are similarities with Vieira.
"He has the same stature and the same size. He has power through the middle of the park. He showed that with his goal and I feel he is growing at the moment.
"There is still a lot of work for him to do to get to where Patrick was, but he is only 22.
"Patrick is a very good role model for him. I was not always happy with his performance, but in the second half he played extremely well.
"There wasn't a lot wrong with his first half performance, but with our possession in the middle of the park we were a bit on the back foot and we didn't protect our defence well enough.
"These are just little things he will learn from game to game."

eh, i think hes nothing like vieira. he always lose his balls, he spends time on dribling and then loses it. we have Cesc, Denilson and Song out there. Denilson and Song are progressing everyday, especially Denilson!

For Diaby to ever be like Vieira, he must up his game in terms of concentration on the ball & consistency of play. For now he looked to me not a player for the league as he is usually out of purpose in most league games but plays well in Champs league games. Wenger should talk to him so he could bring out the potentials in him.

wen diaby is on song, he is briliant to watch, but 9 times out of 10 he ends up tryin to dance wif the ball to much and ends up losin it, completely different to viera who was one of the best CDM players ever to play

Hailing Diaby as the next Vieira would seem a bit far fetched given his inconsistency. But he learns fast and is willing to grow. He most certainly has the hunger and most importantly a fearless attitude that defined Vieira.

He's nothing like Vieira
Never will be
Vieira at 22 was a totally different player! Diaby is weak in defending... Diaby=Diaby

yes diaby is similar to viera. He has long legs and plays football. He has been too inconsistent up till now. Perhaps he has had limited opportunities and has been played out of position before. Can Arsenal afford to wait for him to develop his full potential? I'm not sure they can wait too much longer as there are other players out there who could provide a more instant solution.
