Wenger: This was a major disappointment

Sunday's 4-1 loss to Chelsea has been labelled as a major disappointment by manager Arsène Wenger.

Although the young team created enough chances, they were guilty of not taking them and Chelsea punished them by scoring with almost every attack on the Arsenal goal.

The result confirmed Arsenal's finish in the top four but there is no chance for them to overtake Chelsea and take third spot, which automatically qualifies a team for next season's Champions League.

Wenger said: "It's very difficult. You can be very positive or very negative. We lost the game 4-1 which is a major disappointment but I feel going forward we had a very interesting game and created plenty of chances.

"That is never a 4-1 game, we should have been 2-0 up before they had a shot on goal.

"On the first free-kick we made a mistake and they scored. Today we missed seven or eight clear-cut chances and on every single mistake we made we were punished.

"It means our chances to come third are definitely over. The rest I don't feel will have any other influence than that.

"We had a small opportunity to come third but three months ago everybody said we would finished tenth so I would have signed at that point to finish fourth.

"I don't feel we have to be too disappointed with that but what is very disappointing for us is in the games that mattered in the last three or four weeks we couldn't win.

"That's where we have to analyse. But today there were a lot of positives in the game and we have to take a little distance from the defeat because it's not a 4-1 game today."

We need to make a few changes in the squad. We can sell players like Fabregas,Nasri, Arshavin etc. and buy players like Berbatov, Maldini, Favalli, Brocchi, Shevchenkho , Viera , Figo , Ronaldo (Brazil) .
We need such experienced players. We must honour Silvestre with a new 4 year contract with wages 80,000 pounds for his excellent contributions this season.

the EPL top horses should be renamed as the big 3 instead of the big 4, when was arsenal ever part of the big 4 in recent seasons? an underachieving team yet again!

I hate how this site caters for all you negative posters but everytime I post a positive post it never gets shown. Carry on moping about then. SICK OF THIS BS on this site. Go support another team.

Alan Delaney - you're a fool.......Drogba dived. If that is a foul then 'football as a game' has more to worry about than 'Arsenal as a team' do.

You seem to have hit the nail on the head. I would like to add one thing - I live for the day when Arsene Wenger will just be HONEST. I am so tired of this spin-doctoring. Maybe his players believe him and thus believe they are perfect & don't need to improve? But the fans - I could write his speech at the end of the game. Probably at the beginning.... Unhappily it's his ego that finally got the better of him and that is very sad.

Drogba was clearly fouled by Fabregas, but that didn't stop Sylvester to contest the header with Alex, Wenger should not used this as an excuse for Arsenal's lost, we had our chances but never took them. why was Adebayor on the bench for Diaby to play rubbish. We need to buy, not just buying but quality buying.

Perhaps Wenger and Fabregasbelieved it really was a dive and that you merely disagree with them. Either way, Drogba has a reputation because of many years of having 'taken advantage' of situations and weak referees.

We all know his reputation is extremely well deserved, so should it be so bad if he has a few go against him after having cheated his way to victory so many times before?

I do agree that Ade dived though and think less of him as a result. Perhaps you should feel the same about Drogba?

What is Wenger's problem, always consoling us with one thing or another.Don't you(Wenger) think we are tired of seeing this team play the so called beautiful football without getting the necessary results. This team lacks penetrators, lacks strength and defence.I hope Wenger gets the necessary players for next season.

Wenger is being deceitful. Drogba was clearly fouled and it was very poor of Fabregas and Wenger to try to take advantage of his reputation by suggesting he dived. Fabregas was rightly booked.

The only dive of the game came from Adebeyor - where was Wenger's comment on that?
