Gilberto: Melo should join Arsenal

Former Arsenal captain Gilberto Silva has said that he told fellow Brazil international Felipe Melo to join the Gunners this season.

Rumours are circulating that the North London club have made a substantial offer for the 25-year-old holding midfielder, and Melo has asked Gilberto for recommendations.

Gilberto said: "We heard rumours and he asked me. I said it's a fantastic club and if he's interested he should go without thinking.

"He is exactly what they need - a powerful player with quality.

"If they got him it would be great because he is a player they need at the moment.

"I'm sure if they got him it would be a good signing. I have told him Arsenal is a great club and I am sure next season they will improve.

"Felipe has shown in the national team that he has personality and quality.

"I am sure he has a lot more to grow as well. He is a young player, strong, powerful and has a good quality in his pass.

"My partnership with him works well and I hope we can carry on doing well for Brazil."

However, Melo has a reputation for being a fiery player and in his first season collected 17 yellow cards and 3 red cards.

Perfect for Arsenal then.

It is an interesting article.AW should look inwards.Song and Denilson are very good DMs.he should also give Randall some chances.Afterall,Barcelona just added a few players who werent world stars(keita, hleb&dani alves) and won all d trophies. We have a good sqaud but we need 2 rotate d team next season.Song is still d best in dat role.if AW is bent on adding a DM,then John Obi Mikel is d answer.

Mr Manager sir, when are we getting a first class stricker? Now we hear stories about getting a defencive mid-fielder, well if you want to strengthen it, it is ok but our first priority should be a first class stricker. In my opinion, we have been missing trophies mainly because of weak defence and stricking line not weak mid-fielders. In fact those mid-fielders we have are good enough and they in most cases create many scoring chances but those chances wasted by strickers. You already have about nine mid-fielders, if you add Arshavin and Walcott who are attacking mid-field, you have about eleven, all those are in the first team and all of them are good and can do a good job if you make good selection and of course if they are equipped with more defensive tactics (they can pick quickly since they are young). By adding more are you going to sell some and when? time is running out. Please get a first class stricker before any other signing.

It was GILBERTO I was impressed with during the confederation cup, working away doing the same sound job he use to do for Arsenal, clearly this great man loves the club, and his recommendation to MELO is to be welcomed......of all the players that have left the club in the recent past ,its strange but its Gilberto I miss the most.....Does anyone else feel the same?

Please mr Wenger, study all those comments the fans are making. Some fans are really technical.
By using your vast knowledge and experience, plus those good technical advices, we hope you can get a good withholding mid-fielder. Remember this is the time to plan for winning trophies, any signing which will not address the current weaknesses would rather fail. This time we are in for real victory come next season.

are you all off your rockers?!

this guy is NOT the kind of DM we need. i've been more impressed by song's performance in last season's last months than i've been by melo since his link was reignited a few months back.

song=$0.00 melo=$30M... but cana=$16M figure it out!

has anyone noticed that each time an arsenal player recommends someone, Arsene tries very hard not to sign them, even if they practically beg! So end of story for melo.

that would be the best signing arsenal can make this season, melo is just what arsenal need to start winning some silverware..then maybe throw in someone in the form of eto'o to make it perfect

Mitch is surely not an Arsenal fan & probably he did not watch Brazil games in the just concluded Confederations Cup. Felipe Melo's work rate in the Brazilian team especially in the final game is unrivaled, not even USA's Fairhaber in my opinion have such work rate. Gilberto is an excellent professional who still have the Gunners at heart. I hope Wenger intensifies his chase, hoping that Melo heed to Gilberto's advise.

Couldn't agree more. Melo is a poor man's Senna, and I don't rate Senna as the best in the world in that position anyway.

Melo's passing is OK, but defensive warrior he is not, he does not win most tackles and in fact seems to get tackled most of the time.

He's not better than Flamini, Diarra or Gilberto. In fact I'm not convinced he's better than Denilson or Song. £15m would be a joke.

i would love to see melo come to the emirates. i think he is a great player and is just what arsenal need. i have been watching him in the confederations cup and he is perfect. he can pass, tackle, intercept and shoot!! would be a great buy along with vermelan and benzema!

If the boss has got the money, Melo would be a quality signing. He is just what we need right now. Go for it Arsene.....and good on Gilberto for giving him a poke in the right direction!

I hope he doesn't listen to GS! I've been watching the Confed cup closely and he's definitely not what we need. He's a fine ball distributor, but a poor tackler and never closes down space. He lacks energy and movement. He's certainly not got what it takes to be a DM in the premier league. I think that the reason he's picked up so many yellows and reds in one season in Italy is due to the fact that his tackling is often badly mistimed. Song and Denilson are already better options than Mela, even if we didn't buy someone else.
