The Guardian are reporting that Arsenal have opened transfer talks with Fiorentina over the transfer of Brazilian international Felipe Melo.
Various reports last week indicated that the £21.5 million release clause in Melo's contract was too pricey for Arsenal, but Fiorentina stated that they were willing to consider a player and cash deal.
The player the Italian club wanted was surprisingly Emmanuel Eboue.
Pantaleo Corvino, the Fiorentina sporting director, said: "Mr Wenger wants to talk to me. I have no objection also because Eboue seems a valid swap."
Fiorentina also revealed that whilst there are a number of clubs in the hunt for Melo's signature, Arsenal are at the front of the queue but haven't been able to meet the required transfer fee.
Melo himself has stated that whilst he is happy in Italy, only God knows where his future will take him. Judging by the reaction from Arsenal fans, they are hoping that his future lies in the red and white half of North London.

Not again! It looks like we have missed out again on a very good player. Arsene is a good talker but not a good buyer. All he does is talk, talk, talk. Fiorentina wanted to do good business with arsenal and all we had to do was just reply.....later...what do we hear? He's on his way to Juve. Can Arsene hear the fans frustrations? I don't think so! For God's sake, it's been 4 years without silverware. How long will this go on? What will be the last straw that will break the camel's back? Oh! If we get relegated. The whole Arsenal board are so used to Arsene's 'mediocrity' that they find no problem with it. Who do we turn to now since Melo isn't reality no more? The 17 and 18 yr old teens can't do the job Wenger! Isn't it so obvious? You've been trying it for 'centuries'. Please!!!, hear the Arsenal fans' cry!

Could those of you posting 'Melo has signed with Juventus' please provide a link of the deal being finalized and official? There has been NO press release saying he's signed, and as recently as yesterday, Soccernet showed the following....

Seems as though he is on the verge of signing for juventus. I beleive Melo is exactly the player Arsenal need to make us a real contender for every competition but we're gonna miss out on a great player again because the club wont spend the money which really isnt a lot, well it is a lot but not in todays market, if a team like birmingham can afford to spend £12 mill on a oplayer then im sure Arsenal can afford to spend £20 mill. This news has really upset me, after Fiorentina's comments i genuinely thought we would sign Melo. I beleive at arsenal we are 2 players(quality centre back & centre midfield)short of being one of if not the best team in the premiership. It seems as though one of those players has been purchased already (vermaelen), the other perfect acquisition obviously being Melo. So what im trying to say is that if the club made it their priority to sign this player and were willing to pay the £20 mill or so fee then they do not need anymore players to come in as the first team squad is very strong and capable of challenging on all fronts (in my opinion)and after this the club could just go back to investing little money on young players again.

Let's get it done Arsene'. Arsene' has said himself that he wants to be finished with transfers before training starts. Well they started training Monday so we are a little late. Let's get it done. Then we will have no excuse but to win the league and Champs league.

I had never heard of Melo until the Confederation cup. I watch all of Brasil's games but did not come away with sense that he is a lot better than what Arsenal currently have.

Swapping a player with another one could be a good idea. Mr Wenger is in a better position to assess and decide. We fans can only advise, but definately Arsenal side needs to be reinforced if we are to challenge for trophies. Let us wait and see what the manager will decide.

Melo has just sign for Juventus. Apparently, Arsenal have foot-dragged as usual to allow Juve take over a transfer negotiation that had initially put Arsenal in pole position to land the Brazilian.

I don't mind seeing Melo coming to the Emirates but not at the expense of a player. Why not go for Lorik Cana instead?

For all his faults, Eboue is actually pretty decent. I am not overly surprised that Fiorentina would like a player like him for cover.
