UPDATE: England manager Fabio Capello has hinted that he would not be considering Almunia for a possible goalkeeping role, saying: "Almunia, for me, is Spanish. He is Spanish and he plays for the Arsenal team."
Goalkeeper Manuel Almunia says that there is a possibility that he might play for England should national manager Fabio Capello present him with the opportunity, but it is a decision that the Spaniard is taking time to consider.
The Arsenal number one is eligible to apply for a British passport after having worked in England for 5 years, and with citizenship comes the eligibility to play for the national team.
It's not uncommon for professional footballers to play for their adopted countries. For example, striker Eduardo was born in Brazil but plays for Croatia. With the perception that England do not have enough top-quality goalkeepers, there is a distant possibility that the vacancy could be filled by the 32-year-old Spaniard who is the first choice keeper of a top English club.
But Almunia says that it is a decision that must be considered and deliberated properly, as the potential backlash from the English media and fans is not something he would want to face if the idea is not popularly accepted.
Speaking to the Guardian, Almunia said: "I've been informed what I need to do (to gain British citizenship). If I take the decision I don't think it's difficult to get citizenship. It could be very quick - and soon.
"I have to see what people think because it's not an easy decision. I'm 32 so I don't want any problems with anyone. This is not a silly thing. You are playing with the hearts of people. It [an England cap] is not something you can buy in a shop. I don't want to disturb anybody."
