Arsenal were lucky

Manager Arsène Wenger and striker Robin van Persie concede that there was more than an ounce of luck in the scoring of their two goals in tonight's Champions League tie against Celtic.

Defender William Gallas deflected a shot from captain Francesc Fabregas and a Gary Caldwell own-goal helped seal the result that saw the Gunners put one foot into the group stages of Europe's premier football competition.

van Persie said: "If you look at the first goal, it was a good free-kick and William's run made that goal. But it was very lucky. The second goal was a good attack and in the end their centre-back needed to make the touch. Again it was lucky.

"They played really well but you know if you score just before half-time it is a setback for them. We kept going and it was a good result. "Nothing is impossible but it's looking good for us."

Wenger agreed with van Persie, saying that the match was played at a high tempo and there was a strong determination from the Scottish side which prevented his team from playing their usual game. There was also a lack of quality in the final ball but the Gunners did create enough chances to trouble their opponents.

He added: "Overall I think we controlled the game but were lucky with the two goals we scored. Their energy tonight was sensational. Defensively they did very well and they never gave up. We are in front after 90 (minutes) so let's make sure we are in front after 180."
