Striker Eduardo da Silva has been charged by UEFA for 'deceiving the referee' in the Champions League qualifying round match between Arsenal and Celtic. Arsenal eventually progressed to the group stages of the competition on a 5-1 aggregate score.
Eduardo's simulation brought along the penalty that opened the scoring in the second leg of the tie but the Gunners were already leading with two away goals scored in the first leg.
UEFA have announced that they have begun disciplinary proceedings based on a panel studying video evidence. The charge is based on Article 10, para 1c of the UEFA disciplinary regulations (Misconduct of players):
Players may be suspended for two competition matches, or for a specified period, for acting with the obvious intent to cause any match official to make an incorrect decision or supporting his error of judgement and thereby causing him to make an incorrect decision.
The UEFA Control and Disciplinary Body will examine the case on 1 September.
