Forward Andrey Arshavin has admitted that he was carrying an injury when he played against Manchester United, but insisted that he 'had to play'. The Russian international was substituted in the match, and many initially thought that it was because of a tackle from Darren Fletcher that caused the injury.
Arshavin has now said that he was substituted because he had aggravated an existing injury.
Writing on his official website, he said: "I was replaced because I was injured, still am, but I had to play [against United]. My foot has been injured for some time.
"I am disappointed with the result yes, it is our first defeat but I feel that it can only strengthen us.
"United barely troubled us in the second half, but unfortunately this was enough for us to concede the lead in the match. We tried to get back into the game but it was difficult."
It worries you when players such as Francesc Fabregas and Arshavin are being forced to play when they are injured. Fabregas aggravated his own injury when he was selected to play against Portsmouth, and was subsequently unavailable against Celtic (second leg) and United.
Perhaps without Fabregas, Arshavin would have been the only creative outlet in the team and hence had to be played.
