Defender Johan Djourou has been ruled out of selection for six months after undergoing corrective surgery on his knee.
The Swiss international was hoping to play for his country against Italy in their World Cup qualifier but decided instead to follow the advice of medical staff and undergo the procedure.
With Djourou being out until March 2010, and then a couple more months to gain fitness for competitive first team action, we can safely assume that the Swiss will be out for most of the season.
It is a blessing in disguise then that defender Philippe Senderos' move to Everton fell through, as with Djourou injured Arsenal's defensive options have been reduced to having Mikael Silvestre as the only remaining backup.
Should Switzerland qualify for the 2010 World Cup, Djourou has every intention of representing his country in the finals.
Switzerland moved to the top of their qualifying group today with victory over Greece.
